#FootpathFriday at an old, abandoned #bobsleigh track.

This is the upper section of the 2,450 metre long #Spießbergbahn in #Thuringia, Germany's only remaining natural ice track still in use. Inaugurated in 1910, it once hosted numerous national bobsleigh and #luge competitions. In fact, it's considered the birthplace of German bobsleighing!
Since 1983, only the lower 1,450 metres have been maintained for competitions and training, while the upper section you see here has fallen into disrepair.

The photo shows the first of the track's original 18 curves. The area is now popular with hikers, but we turned around here and didn't explore further as the family was waiting back at the hotel. 😅

Vielleicht nicht der seltsamste Ort, aber nachdem ich diese Fußgängerbrücke jahrzehntelang nur als Fußgängerbrücke gekannt habe, war ich echt baff, wie krass sich #WilderWein ausbreiten kann, wenn man ihn nur lässt. Die Treppe ist komplett zugewachsen. Mit Herbstlaub ein total spektakulärer Anblick!

Maybe not the strangest place, but for decades, I knew this footbridge only as a footbridge. Seeing #BostonIvy reclaiming it so vigorously was mind-boggling – the steps are completely overgrown. And the autumn colours are absolutely spectacular!

A #SilentSunday near #Langenstein.

These ruins are part of what was once an inn. In 1944, prisoners were temporarily housed in its outbuildings while barracks for the nearby Langenstein-Zwieberge concentration camp (a subcamp of Buchenwald) were under construction.
The prisoners were forced to excavate a tunnel system under the hills for the underground production of armour parts. Of the 7,000 prisoners, approximately 2,000 lost their lives. A further 2,500 people perished during death marches following the camp's evacuation in April 1945. The underground facility was never completed.
