On the last day of snow, just before the thaw quietly set in, winter paused for a moment at our garden fence.

Perched there was a Eurasian chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs), known in Dutch as the vink. Alert, upright, and clearly assessing the situation, it seemed to be weighing its chances. The bird feeder was busy — mostly house sparrows, with a few blue tits and great tits darting in and out. Below them, pigeons, blackbirds, magpies and crows scavenged the ground for what inevitably falls. An efficient little ecosystem, even on a grey winter morning.

From the warmth of the house, I watched it all unfold. Outside, the world was cold and muted; inside, quiet and still. The chaffinch waited. This species is known for its adaptability, especially in winter, when flexible feeding strategies and patience can make all the difference. Rather than forcing its way in, it observed — conserving energy, reading movement, timing its next move.

The light was flat and overcast, typical for this time of year. With snow still present and clouds acting like a giant softbox, contrast was low. To keep detail in both feathers and background, I shot handheld with my Canon 5D Mark IV and Sigma 100–400mm at f/11, 1/250 sec, ISO 12800. Not ideal conditions — but honest ones. Winter photography is often about working with what little light you’re given.

There was no drama here. Just calm abundance. Even at the edge of thaw, winter was still quietly doing its work.

A walk through Huis ter Heide & Bosrijk

A few days ago, my wife Christel and I wandered through the northern part of Huis ter Heide, bordering the Efteling Bosrijk. The air was calm, soft clouds drifted by, and sunlight occasionally broke through — just enough to paint the forest in warm tones.

While walking, I noticed a flawless Imleria badia — known as the Bay Bolete or “Kastanjeboleet” in Dutch. It stood proud among fallen leaves, its chestnut-brown cap glistening slightly from the forest’s moisture. This species plays an essential role in the ecosystem, forming symbiotic mycorrhizal bonds with trees like pines and beeches, exchanging nutrients that keep forests thriving.

Later, Christel spotted a red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), poised on a wooden fence, turning its head just as she clicked the shutter on our Canon 5D Mark IV with the Sigma 100–400mm. That curious glance over its shoulder made the shot come alive — pure serendipity.

We ended our walk at Klaas Vaak Lake, where the houses of Efteling Bosrijk mirrored perfectly in the still water. The reflections of reds, greens, and browns looked like a painter’s palette — a calm, storybook ending to a wonderful day outdoors.

Close encounter with a forest master beetle

Meet Trypocopris vernalis, also known as the spring dor beetle — one of the true “masters” of the forest floor. Yesterday, while exploring a beautiful larch and pine forest near Rijen and Oosterhout (the Surea area) with my wife, I spotted this little armored worker quietly making its way through the moss. The day was grey and moody, but a brief ray of sunlight broke through — just enough to bring out that deep black sheen that makes these beetles so mesmerizing up close.

This shot was taken with my Canon 7D Mark II and the Canon MP-E 65mm super macro lens at 5× magnification — a lens that truly lets you dive into another world. At this distance, even a beetle’s face feels monumental. You can see the fine texture of its exoskeleton, this time no grains of forest soil clinging to it, and even the subtle reflection of the forest canopy above.

Scientifically speaking, Trypocopris vernalis plays a vital role in the ecosystem. It’s a dung beetle — recycling nutrients, aerating soil, and quite literally keeping the forest clean. A quiet little hero beneath our feet.

Karma doesn't offer preferential treatment.

Karma doesn't work in favor of good. It's not against bad.

It doesn't prefer love over hate or hate over love. It is an entirely neutral force that does not play favorites.

Karma will not look the way you think it should.

Karma is not punishment. Karma is energetic balance. When something good happens, the equal and opposite bad thing will also occur at some point. It has to. That is balance. It's not punishment, it's balance.

You can't stop karma from happening. You can't eradicate the bad because you can't break the scale. If the scale is broken, it can't balance. That's why you can't break one side of the scale.

Karma does not function based on our construct of time. Karma can balance over lifetimes. Chances are that most of the people that are in our world are working out some karma of their own from previous lifetimes.

Our human systems of reward and punishment try to mimic karma. What we're actually doing is creating more of our own individual karma to play out either in our current lifetimes or in future lifetimes.

Yes, doing good things creates karma. The natural balance is that something bad will happen. "Bad things happen to good people." Why? Karma. That is the law of balance. It is not a punishment.

Karma does not function based on human constructs of right and wrong. It doesn't know the difference. It's only looking for a neutral balance.

The reason why you see karma as punishment is because of your perception of right and wrong or good and bad. Those perceptions limit you from being able to see the bigger balance that gets created.

If you look around you in the larger world and you drop your perceptions of good and bad or right and wrong, you will see that it does actually balance out on a larger scale.

Because of the way of the human world tends to function, karma looks a little more like an elastic band snapping back into shape. It tends to give you whiplash because of the extremes of it and how quickly it happens.

If I'm being really honest with you right now, what you're seeing in the world is karma. Things are balancing. It doesn't look the way you think it should, but it is balancing. Remember karma is not punishment. The things that are happening are balancing the good that has taken place. There will always be a counter-balance and sometimes that looks like going backward.

It's hard to watch but this is the process of balance. Do you want to know the real truth? If we removed all human systems of reward and punishment and all laws trying to create artificial balance, and simply left karma to do its thing, the world would naturally balance after a while. It would look really wild at first, think about that elastic snapping back, but it would eventually balance on its own because that's how karma works.

Love to all.

Della
