A federal jury found the owners of the Grand Gateway Hotel in South Dakota liable for discrimination against Native Americans in a decision on Friday. The hotel's owner, Retsel Corporation, must pay damages to plaintiffs who were denied service at the hotel. The NDN Collective, an Indigenous advocacy group that filed the lawsuit, was awarded $1. The jury also found NDN Collective acted as a nuisance, awarding $812 to the hotel owners in their countersuit against the group. The case followed a 2022 social media post by the hotel owner saying it would ban Native Americans from the property.

After watching politics for a few decades, I now have a strong negative reaction to every suggestion that a new sports arena will/should/could be built, like this announcement (first pic) that the San Antonio Spurs want a new one. The history of major league #sports stadiums in the #usa is a shitshow of #corruption and theft.
The worst case I personally know (because I live in Western NY): In 2002, Buffalo and WNY residents rejected Hochul's request for $600M for a new #BuffaloBills stadium. A few very rich people really wanted that stadium (they got sweetheart deals for concessions, etc.), so she broke the law to appropriate "shared" funds from the Seneca Nation of Indians.
The conquest did not end. Occupation did not end. And I will not attend any events in that fucking stadium, even if I think #TheBills are about as cool as an #NFL team can be.
(Subtext: NY State is "blue" in particular ways. After I moved here one of my friends said that NY governors have a "D" by their name but you don't get elected NY Governor unless you behave like a mafia boss)
Here's some really good news. I do like that beach, it's about 45 minutes from where I grew up - but it's also a tourist trap that has been exploited by local business to immense profit for generations. Respecting treaty rights is so important, and is one of the most important things Canadians can do to try to repair ther relationship with First Nations peoples.

That’s because in July 2020, Canada filed a Motion to Strike against the Misdzi Yikh Charter challenge. Several years and an appeal hearing (that ended with the Federal Court of Appeal deciding that the section 7 of the Charter challenge was justiciable) later, Canada has filed for another Motion to Strike.
