Also fun morning haul from last week: mesquite pods, some "volunteer" wheat (for the chickens, not for replanting), and a handful of squash blossoms.

The mesquite trees do so much for our ecosystem. They fix nitrogen, produce canopy, their thorny branches protect rodent and lizard burrows, and they produce lots of food very early in their lifespan comparative to most "tree crops". Our velvet mesquites produce the best, most edible pods with the biggest seeds, but the screwbeans (shown) do their job with little seeds but starchy pods. I try to harvest a combination and grind them into flour, pods and all.

If you're up in #Namgis territory/ #AlertBay - you'll want to try & get some yummy bannock eats from #DuchessBannockAndDesserts. The hours are irregular, like most small businesses on #CormorantIsland. If you luck out - you'll find the Duchess of #Bannock & she will fill your belly while engaging in lively conversations!
I found out on my 2023 trip there, that she's an Auntie/relative to some of my Indigenous friends πŸ’—

She gifted me a book, a magic hat bunny plushie & gave us free cheese bannock bites to eat on the ferry. We bought 3 different bannock goodies from her.

#MapleSyrup update! This is what I collected this morning. That grey bucket is five gallons, for scale. I think it’s just over 2 gallons of actual #sap.

I’m told some folks toss out the ice, but when I eat it it tastes sweet to me, so I always just put it all in there.

Are you #tapping #trees this year?

Top 5 native fruits:

passion fruit
persimmon
black raspberry

wild plum

blueberry

We need to be eating more of this. Abundance is possible when living in harmony with nature. No watering or pest control necessary.

The magenta lilly pilly is a rainforest tree with a total population of around 1,200 plants spread across a narrow 400 kilometre stretch of coastal NSW.

Plants produce white flower-clusters at the end of each branch between November and February. Its bright pink edible fruit is dispersed by flying foxes and rainforest birds. Luckily, we have a beautiful mature specimen growing in our backyard. It’s flowering now, so the fruit is still coming.

But, as a summer desert for a festive family feast this weekend, we had similarly flavoured marinated and chilled Australian bush plums with frozen meringue crumbled on top. 🍨
