A visit this afternoon to Crook Hall and Gardens, now in the care of the National Trust in Durham NE England.
A visit at this time of the year, when the garden's plants are going into overdrive, always reminds me of a song heard regularly on the 'wireless' in my youth.
'English Country Garden' was a top-ten chart hit back in the day sung by a fella called Jimmie Rodgers:

"How many kinds of sweet flowers grow
In an English country garden
I'll tell you now of some that I know
And those that I miss you'll surely pardon
Daffodils, hearts ease and flox
Meadowsweet and lady smocks
Gentian lupine and tall hollyhocks
Roses, foxgloves, snowdrops, forget me nots
In an English country garden."

Crook Hall itself is surrounded by English country style gardens, which is said to be among the best in the north of England.

Some people like the flowers. Others might remember the Scottish group called The Bluebells. Their track "Yo ...

Set within the rolling countryside of Sevenoaks, Knole is a grand #HistoricEstate celebrated for its magnificent #TudorArchitecture and sprawling #EnglishGardens. The sprawling #CountryHouse, now cared for by the #NationalTrust, is surrounded by vast parkland where deer freely roam and formal lawns lead to colourful borders. Visitors can stroll through the manicured gardens and woodland paths, enjoying sweeping views of the Kent landscape. Knole offers a glimpse into centuries of English heritage, blending opulent interiors with tranquil natural beauty.

@afewbugs @rlonstein @TheBreadmonkey It may have looked as if we were eating fruit scones at Croome on Sunday, but we were really putting out the last embers of the British Empire.
You couldn't invent him.

I only have a small garden, but this time of year it can feel a bit like a #NationalTrust home in the sunshine.
