MULTCO DA: We Agree With The MAGA People Who Do The Bomb Threats And Stuff, It Is Wrong To Prosecute Violent Chuds Who Travel To Portland With The Intent To Assault People And Start Fights In Our Streets

A right-wing journalist and influencer arrested at a Portland immigration protest acted in self defense and will not be prosecuted, a senior deputy district attorney determined.

The arrest sparked a political maelstrom, drawing condemnation from President Donald Trump’s press secretary and prompting the U.S. Department of Justice to probe whether local officers have engaged in “viewpoint discrimination.”

...
BTW Sortor assaulted people again last night while shoving his way into a medic tent set up by anti-ICE protesters.

A year ago today I was sentenced to two weeks in jail after an extremely legally inconsistent verdict. The prosecutor, who was colluding with the far right throughout the entirety of my trial, changed the definition of what it means to be a “participant” at the last minute and painted me out to be the “Antifa ringleader” after seeing proof that my actions I was charged for were indeed self defense from Proud Boys violence. The goal was to find a way to get me anyways. He confused the jury, which was evident by the questions they repeatedly asked during deliberations and were never given an answer to. Maximum security was at full capacity but they sent someone home to make room for me anyways. General confinement wasn’t enough. They had a point to prove. They kept me in a freezing cold tiny holding cell with 10 other people at any given moment that had blood and vomit all over the floor for 24 hours before they finally took me to my cell. There is a lot to this story to share. A lot. It’s been quite the year and my mental health is still recovering from a lot of unprocessed trauma from both the trial and everything else that’s transpired over the years. I’ve decided that I’m ready to share about it all, but this is something I will be needing help with. I don’t have the mental and emotional capacity to do this by myself at the moment, and I’m not sure when I will. I’m feeling a lot of things today, but mostly gratitude. I’m so grateful for all of your support during some of the hardest days of my life. I’m extremely grateful for all of my friends and family and community who stuck by my side. And I’m beyond grateful for having the CLDC represent me. Having a legal team who actually understood everything I was going through made the world of a difference. I couldn’t have asked for a better team both supporting me and defending me. Rest in Power, Murphy. The courage you gave me will live in me forever. Thank you all so, so much. I don’t have the words to express how I feel, but gratitude is a start. Solidarity forever 🖤

the only good that could come out of Mike Schmidt starting this stupid podcast is if it’s bait to unveil the dark money shit pit that funded his even-worse opposition.

DA nixes deal, demands tougher manslaughter sentence. Grieving spouse calls it ‘performative cruelty’

a man whose wife was killed by a drunk driver slammed District Attorney Nathan Vasquez for ripping up a plea deal approved by his predecessor and imposing a tougher sentence.

“It just feels like performative cruelty,” said Lauran Parise, who was sitting in the passenger seat next to his wife, Jennifer Parise, two years ago when a drunk driver slammed into their sedan, killing her.

“But an analysis by researcher Jeff Asher showed that, according to the limited data available, the stores Target closed in Portland and Seattle had less crime than stores that were not closing.”

Local media outlets (and particularly the one known for training up future police spokespeople) shared flagrant & harmful corporate disinformation about “organized retail theft”, and very few of them ever corrected the record. Not only is this hugely fucking irritating, this dishonest “law and order” fearmongering also 100% contributed to the political climate which enabled the current fascist takeover of the US govt.

Myth vs. Reality: Trends in Retail Theft

Despite spikes in some cities, crime data doesn’t show a nationwide increase in shoplifting and other forms of retail theft.

“Our district attorney’s office could take actions that would help with the public defense crisis,” Reding said. “In Multnomah County, our attorneys prepare a lot of cases for trial that turn into dismissals on the eve of trial. If our district attorney’s office could identify those cases that are dismissals much earlier in the process and dismiss them, that would save many hours of defense attorney time that we could then turn around and focus on taking new cases.”

Or y’know, just stop charging so much shit. Oregon’s well-fed prosecuting attorneys are operating in bad faith, and often on extremely flimsy charges.

Oregon public defenders warn of ongoing crisis as defendants remain without representation

Public defenders tell Oregon state lawmakers: system is still in crisis, people still in custody without representation.

In Multnomah County, the district attorney has unfairly demonized public defenders, blaming us for systemic failures beyond our control. The reality is that we stand as a check against government overreach, ensuring that justice is not necessarily swift, but fair.

American Bar Association finds Oregon has just 1/3 of needed public defenders

A defendant’s right to effective counsel is guaranteed under the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The ABA’s findings are the latest indicator to raise questions about whether Oregon is providing adequate defense to people who cannot afford an attorney.

Defense lawyers say Multnomah County DA candidate violated ethics by accusing client of being a serial killer

“Designed to influence public opinion and electoral outcomes, Mr. Vasquez’s statement risks prejudicing potential proceedings and heightening public condemnation of an individual who has not been charged with the crimes mentioned,” Kaplan wrote. “Mr. Vasquez’s actions demonstrate a disregard for the ethical obligations that safeguard the fairness and impartiality of legal proceedings, essential tenets of the justice system he is sworn to serve.”
