Chi l’avrebbe detto: tra spiagge da sogno e acque cristalline, gli squali delle Bahamas sembrano aver fatto incetta di farmaci e stimolanti umani. Un recente studio dell’Università federale del Paraná, pubblicato su Environmental Pollution, ha scoperto tracce di caffeina, antidolorifici e addirittura cocaina nel sangue di alcune decine di squali al largo dell’isola di Eleuthera, a circa 80 km da Nassau.
Natascha Wosnick, biologa marina responsabile della ricerca, spiega che quasi un terzo dei 85 squali analizzati presentava residui di farmaci di origine umana, tra cui paracetamolo e diclofenac. “È la prima volta che troviamo sostanze come la cocaina in questi animali”, sottolinea Wosnick. Gli effetti sugli squali, aggiunge, sono ancora sconosciuti, ma i campioni indicano cambiamenti metabolici come livelli alterati di trigliceridi, urea e lattato, segni di stress fisiologico.
Quando il mare diventa un cocktail chimico
La scoperta lancia un campanello d’allarme sull’inquinamento marino: farmaci, stimolanti e sostanze di consumo umano finiscono inevitabilmente nelle acque, alterando i ritmi biologici di specie che vivono completamente immerse nell’ambiente creato dall’uomo. Anche se al momento non ci sono evidenze di modifiche comportamentali negli squali, studi precedenti su altre specie ittiche suggeriscono che stimolanti come caffeina e cocaina possano incidere su energia e reazioni.
Il fenomeno, seppur sorprendente, conferma quanto l’attività umana stia modellando in modi imprevedibili la vita marina. E se pensavate che gli squali fossero immuni alle follie del mondo terrestre, lo studio dimostra il contrario: le nostre abitudini, dai farmaci ai caffè consumati in spiaggia, arrivano fino a loro e lasciano un’impronta chimica invisibile ma evidente. In sintesi, le Bahamas restano un paradiso per i turisti, ma per gli squali il mare sta diventando un “cocktail” decisamente pericoloso.

Who would have thought: between dream beaches and crystal-clear waters, sharks in the Bahamas seem to have stockpiled human drugs and stimulants. A recent study by the Federal University of Paraná, published in Environmental Pollution, has discovered traces of caffeine, painkillers, and even cocaine in the blood of several dozen sharks off the coast of Eleuthera Island, about 80 km from Nassau.

Natascha Wosnick, a marine biologist responsible for the research, explains that almost a third of the 85 sharks analyzed had traces of human-derived drugs, including paracetamol and diclofenac. “It’s the first time we’ve found substances like cocaine in these animals,” Wosnick emphasizes. She adds that the effects on the sharks are still unknown, but the samples indicate metabolic changes such as altered levels of triglycerides, urea, and lactate, signs of physiological stress.

When the sea becomes a chemical cocktail

The discovery raises an alarm about marine pollution: drugs, stimulants, and human consumables inevitably end up in the water, altering the biological rhythms of species that live completely immersed in the environment created by humans. Although there is currently no evidence of behavioral changes in the sharks, previous studies on other fish species suggest that stimulants like caffeine and cocaine can affect energy and reactions.

The phenomenon, although surprising, confirms how human activity is shaping marine life in unpredictable ways. And if you thought that sharks were immune to the follies of the terrestrial world, the study proves the opposite: our habits, from drugs to coffee consumed on the beach, reach them and leave an invisible but evident chemical imprint. In short, the Bahamas remain a paradise for tourists, but for the sharks, the sea is becoming decidedly dangerous “cocktail.”
