The Veil Nebula Complex

The Veil Nebula is a large supernova remnant in the constellation Cygnus. The source supernova exploded between 10.000 and 20.000 years ago, and the remnants have since expanded to cover an area roughly 3 degrees in diameter (about 6 times the diameter, and 36 times the area, of the full Moon). The distance to the nebula is not precisely known, with estimates ranging from 1,400 to 2,600 light-years.

Sadr Region and Crescent Nebula

With an apparent magnitude of 2.2, Sadr is one of the brightest stars in the night sky, forming the intersection of an asterism of five stars, called the northern cross. The huge star in the center of the image is located about 1.800 lightyears from earth.

The Crescent Nebula (NGC 6888) in the top right is a cosmic bubble of gas and dust, created by the stellar wind of the Wolf-Rayet star WR 136. The nebula is located at a distance of about 5.000 lightyears from earth.

Es handelt sich hier um einen Reflexionsnebel, er leuchtet also nicht selbst, sondern reflektiert das Licht des Sterns SAO 10158 in seinem Zentrum. Umgeben wird der Nebel von dunklen Wolken interstellarem Staubs.

The Iris Nebula, located at a distance of about 1.300 light-years from earth in the constellation Cepheus, is a reflection nebula, which means that it shines by reflecting the light of the star SAO 19158, which is located in the center of the nebula. It’s also known as the “Flower Nebula” due to its shape and colors. The nebula is surrounded by dark clouds of interstellar dust, which give it its distinctive shape.
