Pharmacologists and microbiologists from the University of Colorado’s Anschutz Campus report the successful development and deployment of just such a drug. The researchers combined polymeric nanogels with a peptide compound that eases their cellular entry and the antibiotic gentamicin in order to effectively kill pseudomonas bacteria that hide within bladder lining cells. When injected into the bladder, this nanogel-peptide-antibiotic complex is able to convey 36% more of the antibiotic into the cell interior than conventional administration techniques. When tested in animal models, it successfully eliminates more than 90% of bladder bacteria.
