For years now I’ve been a frequent visitor to nations where sweating in a small wooden room is a traditional pastime — think the Nordics, Germany, Austria and Japan — where no one would dream of wearing swimwear. I’ve merely joined in, like the purist that I am, feeling all the more smug for it. But at home in Britain? It always seemed somehow against the rules. Until I heard the story of Halsa Sauna near Swansea …
Halsa, which was told to close by the local council last week, suggests that things might be starting to change. The beachside sauna was shut down after neighbours complained about “naked and semi-naked” guests being visible to the public (although the owner has insisted the site is sheltered).
It might be bad news for Halsa, but I felt encouraged on hearing that people were not only interested in going to a sauna, but actually disrobing once there. While we have embraced the heat in the UK — according to the British Sauna Society, there are now more than 600 public saunas, up from 45 in 2023 — we have been slower to strip off. Abroad, nudity is part of the experience and swimwear is often banned.
Could it be that Brits are finally feeling bold enough to strip off?...

Germans generally have a rather liberal perspective on nudity, with saunas and beaches among the places where locals like to get naked. Do you find Germany's 'free body culture' liberating or intrusive? Share your thoughts in our reader survey.
We all come to Germany with certain ideas and expectations. Assuming you did just a bit of research before moving to the Bundesrepublik, you might've been prepared to battle a bit of bureaucracy, or to put up with less-than-punctual trains and face a not insignificant language barrier.
But were you prepared for the naked people?
Foreigners who live in Germany tend to learn quite quickly that the country takes a rather liberal approach to nudity. Here, a so-called 'free body culture' (Freikörperkultur - FKK) is celebrated, and not always in private or secluded places.
This is perhaps not so surprising to people coming from some other European countries, but can be quite shocking for the unexpecting American or Brit, or anyone coming from cultures that are less open to letting it all hang out.
From mixed-gender textile-free saunas to FKK beaches, even daily life in Germany is not always for the prude. And that's to say nothing of the nightclubs that encourage adult themes.
Some argue that the German pro-nudity attitude is natural or even healthy -- that it encourages body positivity. But people who can't get used to it are effectively left to learn which places and activities to avoid.

**Women brave icy waters topless at Brighton beach for cancer charity**

Dozens of women braved freezing waters topless to highlight the importance of checking breasts.
The event, which took place on March 22 on the nudist breach in Brighton, was hosted by CoppaFeel, a youth-focused breast cancer awareness charity.
Nearly 50 people have already signed up to take part in the event to highlight the importance of checking your chest, and the organisers would love to get more people to join in.
CoppaFeel was founded in 2009 by sisters Maren and Kristin Hallenga, after Kristin was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 23.
The charity is dedicated to promoting early detection of breast cancer by educating young women, primarily those aged 18–30, to check their breasts regularly.
Jo Elliott, from Cambridge, was visiting a friend in Brighton and enjoying a coffee by the beach when they spotted the swimmers.
“I had breast cancer two years ago so seeing this has been really lovely,” she said. “It means a lot; I feel quite emotional actually.”
Katy Carson, from Hastings and Alex Higgs, from Southwick said the swim was “freezing” but “really good”.
“It’s a nice one to kickstart the swimming season and great to see women of all ages, bodies and backgrounds come together for a good cause.”
Katherine Arbery and Katie Cuming, both from Brighton, said the swim was “cold and exhilarating” and it felt “quite liberating” to swim topless.
