Yet, for one thing, these are forms that emphasize presence, authenticity, relatability and engagement over original argument or conceptual or formal innovation. For another, I fear this mindset, while trying to create media according to a different set of principles from the mainstream model, nevertheless risks sliding back into – and, through its norms and standards, may even actively produce – the #neoliberal subjectivity of the commodified ‘authentic’ self and cult of personality.

What’s needed as far as I’m concerned is neither of these stances – which it would be too simple to categorise as the liberal and neoliberal – but something else besides.
