Around 1992, I was working for IBM UK Labs and on assignment to the IBM lab in Boca Raton, FL for the development of OS/2 2.0. Management mandated a 6+-day 60-hour working week and maintained it for around 9 months.

I was on UK employment terms and was not required to follow the edict (and I got paid overtime when I exceeded core hours). I never managed to exceed 52 hours in any week.

The entire staff was wandering around in a zombie-like state. The number of regressions and unnecessary errors introduced each week was extraordinary. It was the least productive environment I've ever worked in.

@bigzaphod It has been a long time since I last read this essay. But interestingly, anyone considering the use of increased automation in coding would probably do well to chew over the few paragraphs following this first part of the essay, entitled "The Joys of the Craft" and "The Woes of the Craft".

Current attempts at automation feel pretty closing to attempting to automate away the former and increase the amount of the latter for the programmer to do...
