The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man

Just finished reading this excellent 1912 novel by James Weldon Johnson - the fictional account of a young biracial man living in the post-Reconstruction era of America. The title of the book is a bit misleading since throughout most of the lead character's story he is exploring his place in society with full acknowledgment of his true racial identity.

Weldon was a writer + civil rights activist - an early leader of the NAACP. He was known during the Harlem Renaissance for his poems + wrote the lyrics for "Lift Every Voice and Sing", which later became known as the Black National Anthem.

Latest read: “The Highly Sensitive Person in Love” by Elaine Aron on #libby

I think this really hit close to home for me. Less practical advice for how to live and adapt in relationships if you’re a “highly sensitive person”. There was also some interesting discussion on gender roles and sensitivity and how a “highly sensitive male” (HSM) feels less than manly in our culture and …. Yeah i have to think about that a lot and my ideas around my own gender and transitioning.

📚 James Baldwin on Giovanni's Room (1956) 📚

I just finished Giovanni's Room and it has found a space on my favorite books of all time list. Perhaps I should have read this novel 40 years ago when I was in my mid 20s - but I'm not at all upset that I only discovered it now. I'm sure that it resonated in quite a different way for this 60 something single man.
