@Sempf systemd never "shot my dog". The systemd timers is the first time I've really found something that impacted my life, to dislike. But then the systemd-cron #debian package was right there, so it's not as though an "out" to this problem wasn't provided for me.
To all the #systemd haters - look, #MXlinux has a nice balance where systemd is not the default, but then gives an easy path to using systemd, should it prove to be necessary (and in my case, yes it is). Hating systemd is no hill to die on, I say.
Spent some time tonight messing around with MX Linux (Plasma + SysV). MX is a Debian stable respin.
I like it. The installer is pretty vanilla and it automated setting up an optional samba server and some other services, including rsync (am I the only one that finds the choice of rsync daemon eyebrow raising?).
Filesystem layout in the installer is pretty rudimentary. I may try doing a ZFS install via chroot+debootstrap depending on how involved it gets with MX (done zero research)
I think this is the first SysV box I've touched for the better part of 10 years. Listing services gave me flashbacks to the fleet of several hundred RHEL 5-6 boxes I used to maintain. Ha. Good times....? Yeah, they were actually...
The apt sources directly reference debian.org and there is another sources file for MX Linux specific endpoints. I guess it makes sense but adds load to debian.org without the direct credit in a way.
The animated plymouth and KDE startup splash is cool looking.
I think I'll try it on my physical test box.

Pas pour aller sur le net, mais plus comme un terminal, prise de note, lecture pdf/ebook ?
Comme les dernières distro font l'impasse sur le 32 bit, je sais pas trop. Une ancienne distro #mxlinux ? Une #antixlinux ? Une #alpinelinux ? (Me proposez pas #raspbian). Je reste attaché à debian, apt et apt-get...
