Sé que no estoy haciendo la mejor promoción posible para ayudar a mi amiga, pero quiero ayudarla a no sólo cubrir sus necesidades (comida, agua, electricidad e Internet), sino también a conseguir cosas que mejorarán su vida, incluyendo una nueva tablet con la que podrá volver a dibujar y hacer modelos VR.

I've been active for several years in a disability-related, identity-based, and heavily medicalized #community.

I've experienced mutual support, friendship, solidarity, and genuine care. Some people I've met there have had a meaningful impact on my life.

I've also experienced things that left me uneasy: epistemic injustice, feeling instrumentalized in projects led by professionals, informal hierarchies, self-appointed leaders, economic interests, influence networks, and power concentrated in the hands of a few people.

I don't think these dynamics are unique to any one community, and I'm not interested in blaming individuals. I'm trying to understand the dynamics.

Are these tensions produced by medicalization? Identity politics? Weak democratic structures and accountability? Professionalization? Something else?

Curious to hear how others have thought about or experienced this.
