Agi: Gerusalemme, Pizzaballa entra al Santo Sepolcro. I fedeli restano fuori

AGI - Come aveva promesso il premier israeliano Benjamin Netanyahu, il cardinale Pierbattista Pizzaballa è potuto entrare questa mattina al Santo Sepolcro di Gerusalemme per i riti della Pasqua. Ma com'era stato ugualmente chiarito, i fedeli sono rimasti quasi tutti fuori, tenuti a distanza dai militari israeliani.
I vicoli della Città Vecchia solitamente affollati durante la festa più importante del calendario cristiano questa mattina erano deserti. Le restrizioni imposte da Israele sono state allentate solo per il Patriarca Latino. Chi tentava di avvicinarsi alla chiesa, veniva fermato ai posti di blocco. Solo a un piccolo gruppo di fedeli è stato concesso di avvicinarsi al Santo Sepolcro.
Il messaggio di Pizzaballa e l'impedimento precedente
"Buona Pasqua," ha detto Pizzaballa arrivando poco dopo l'alba alla chiesa, circondato da pochi sacerdoti. Domenica scorsa, domenica delle Palme, gli era stato impedito di entrare per ordine di Netanyahu che oggi ha inviato un messaggio ai cristiani.
Libertà di culto e restrizioni di sicurezza
"In questa terra dove è iniziata la storia, continuiamo a proteggere con fermezza la libertà di culto per tutte le fedi, specialmente in questo momento sacro", ha scritto. L'accesso ai luoghi santi di tutte le fedi è però interdetto dall'inizio della guerra in Iran, il 28 febbraio. Ai musulmani non è stato permesso di pregare alla Spianata delle Moschee durante Ramadan. Ufficialmente, si tratta di misure di sicurezza per evitare rischi di vittime o feriti in caso missili iraniani o detriti cadano sulla Città Vecchia.

Pizzaballa's message and the previous impediment

Freedom of worship and security restrictions
“In this land where history began, we continue to firmly protect the freedom of worship for all faiths, especially in this sacred moment,” he wrote. However, access to holy sites of all faiths has been prohibited since the beginning of the war in Iran, on February 28th. Muslims were not allowed to pray at the Temple Mount during Ramadan. Officially, these are security measures to avoid risks of casualties or injuries in the event of Iranian missiles or debris falling on the Old City.

Il 20 marzo Benjamin Netanyahu ha scritto su X: «Ancora fake news sul mio atteggiamento verso i cristiani, che sono protetti e prosperano in Israele». Erano passate ventiquattr’ore dalla conferenza stampa in cui aveva dichiarato, citando lo storico Will Durant, che «la storia dimostra che, purtroppo, Gesù Cristo non ha alcun vantaggio su Gengis Khan. Perché se sei abbastanza forte, abbastanza spietato, abbastanza potente, il male avrà la meglio sul bene». Era il 19 marzo. Oggi è Giovedì Santo.
Padre Gabriel Romanelli, parroco della chiesa della Sacra Famiglia di Gaza — unica parrocchia cattolica della Striscia di Gaza — ha stimato che dall’ottobre 2023 sono stati uccisi cinquantaquattro cristiani della comunità. La chiesa è stata colpita dal fuoco israeliano in due occasioni distinte: la prima nel dicembre 2023, quando un cecchino ha aperto il fuoco nel cortile uccidendo due donne; la seconda nel luglio 2025, quando un proiettile di un carro armato israeliano ha colpito il compound, causando morti e feriti tra i rifugiati all’interno. Padre Romanelli non si è mai mosso da Gaza. Nel compound vivono oggi circa cinquecento sfollati, in larga maggioranza musulmani.
La comunità cristiana di Gaza contava settemila persone nel 2007. Nell’ottobre del 2023, alla vigilia dell’escalation, ne erano rimaste 1.017. Oggi la cifra non è verificabile: parte è morta, parte è fuggita, parte vive nel compound della Sacra Famiglia in attesa della Pasqua. Cinque scuole cristiane esistevano a Gaza prima del 7 ottobre 2023. Ne funziona una sola, quella del compound parrocchiale, con centosessanta bambini. Il Patriarcato latino di Gerusalemme la descrive come l’unica scuola cristiana ancora aperta nella Striscia.

On March 20th, Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on X: “More fake news about my attitude towards Christians, who are protected and thrive in Israel.” Twenty-four hours had passed since the press conference in which he had stated, citing historian Will Durant, that “history shows that, unfortunately, Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan. Because if you are strong enough, ruthless enough, powerful enough, evil will triumph over good.” It was March 19th. Today is Holy Thursday.

Father Gabriel Romanelli, pastor of the Church of the Holy Family in Gaza – the only Catholic parish in the Gaza Strip – estimated that fifty-four Christians from the community had been killed since October 2023. The church was struck by Israeli fire on two separate occasions: the first in December 2023, when a sniper opened fire in the courtyard, killing two women; the second in July 2025, when a projectile from an Israeli tank struck the compound, causing deaths and injuries among refugees inside. Father Romanelli has never left Gaza. Today, approximately five hundred displaced people live in the compound, mostly Muslims.

The Christian community of Gaza numbered 7,000 in 2007. In October 2023, the eve of the escalation, there were 1,017 remaining. Today the figure is unverifiable: some have died, some have fled, some live in the compound of the Holy Family awaiting Easter. Five Christian schools existed in Gaza before October 7, 2023. Only one functions now, that of the parochial compound, with one hundred and sixty children. The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem describes it as the only Christian school still open in the Strip.
