i figured out that you can derive the melodic minor scale by sharping the 7th degree of the Dorian mode! that realization inspired this little chord progression, which i decided to put on a reggaeton beat because one of my friends told me he has been really into reggaeton lately :) this one is just for fun, but who knows... it could work as a jam

1/n Saturday #DailyTracks : Folks should know the obvious minimal configuration for covering basically any tune is a #Trio. This could be a #Music101 thing but it’s actually more complicated than that.Depending on how hip your music department is undergrad music appreciation might go there. This would dovetail nicely with an intro to #MusicTheory course. Ultimately your listening will be the most important arbiter.Classical, Jazz & Prog have all the things. Two good ears are a minimal cover charge-

`The scales are distinguished from the harmonic and ascending melodic minor scales by the lowered supertonic or second scale degree. This could also be known as the "Phrygian harmonic minor" or "Phrygian melodic minor." The scale therefore shares with the Phrygian mode the property of having a minor second above the tonic.`

Double the length of every chord with one setting — perfect when changing styles throws off the harmonic rhythm.

Where to find it: Style → Bar Length → 2x

Great for:
• Reharmonizing slow tunes in Latin or up-tempo swing styles
• Practicing solos over a more relaxed chord rhythm
• Creating double-time feels without rewriting the chart

`Music, like all art, is communicative. Most composers, performers, and listeners agree that music conveys something—an idea, a story, an emotion—to the listener. A comparison with spoken or written language, then, will be instructive, particularly since a number of music theory terms are borrowed from linguistics.`

22. Phrases, Cadences, and Harmonic Function – Fundamentals, Function, and Form

<a href="https://milneopentextbooks.org/fundamentals-function-and-form/">Return to milneopentextbooks.org to download PDF and other versions of this text</a><p>This text provides readers with a comprehensive study of the theory and analysis of tonal Western art music. Author Andre Mount begins by building a strong foundation in the understanding of rhythm, meter, and pitch as well as the notational conventions associated with each. From there, he guides the reader through an exploration of polyphony—the simultaneous sounding of multiple independent melodies—and an increasingly rich array of different sonorites that grow out of this practice. The book culminates with a discussion of musical form, engaging with artistic works in their entirety by considering the interaction of harmonic and thematic elements, but also such other musical dimensions as rhythm, meter, texture, and expression.</p>

Fundamentals, Function, and Form

Star Trek built functioning Klingon grammar but couldn't imagine a single new chord progression. Every captain listens to pre-2000 music. That's not nostalgia. That's a failure of theory.

it's interesting that "flat" is the opposite of "sharp" in musical terminology, not "dull"... who came up with that? :) #etymology #musicTheory #sound
