New Rock Roundup Vol 47

This is our brand new weekly feature (Normally) on a Monday! The New Rock Roundup will rank the latest releases spanning across the world of rock music. With entries from rock, metal, metalcore, punk, pop punk, alternative and indie!

There will be a brief explanation about why I (Fox) enjoy the song in question from each category before I rank them at the end in terms of my own preference. I would love to hear your own person ranking as well as why you agree with or disagree with my comments.

Follow the playlist!

New Rock Roundup

Rock

Waterparks – PROWLER.

This is going to be like nothing you have heard before. Rap, rock and lots of electronic elements. This is not something I would normally bump into on my usual listening , but boy am I glad that I did!

https://open.spotify.com/track/5fD5ikfL6P5NZkbQYCfXa7?si=de191528a2124979

Metal

Wage War – BLINDFOLD.

I saw these guys opening for Papa Roach and was impressed! They have found themselves a really niche hard sound. With it being between Metal/Rap/Pop. The riffs on this track are really menacing which doesn’t quite fit the rest of it, but the vocal flow is really well done.

https://open.spotify.com/track/14CHUiA5TOvpYvIl63TSI6?si=d080c652cfc94c2d

Metalcore

Catch Your Breath, Kami Kohoe – [Gen] Inside.

I appear to be listening to a lot of bands from Texas recently, these cool cats are from Austin specifically. I enjoy the high-pitched male vocals, and the way they contrast beautifully against the female and harsh vocals too. The riffs are not a mainstay for me in this song, but the drums are killer!

https://open.spotify.com/track/3Xxgc1xtFJIH5oRN2JtqOf?si=c021f06642194672

Punk

Prince Daddy & The Hyena – Oh, Donna.

This weeks Punk is on the softer side of things, but I am in a good mood so bright and easy is the theme. If you like the punk style without all the aggression and political themes then this is for you.

https://open.spotify.com/track/0KRJymLWNDp5U29RtTEHt4?si=fa7805670df343e6

Pop Punk

The Summer Set – Cloudy With A Chance.

This is about as stereotypical pop-punk as you can get but that chorus is AMAZING. This would make it’s way onto a summer playlist which always means it is pretty good!

https://open.spotify.com/track/6cFwVYBhO3b9qZnhQdmZRO?si=ba0a6ee8f9dd464b

Alternative

The Band CAMINO – Holly!.

They describe themselves as “Your mum’s favourite band” to be honest, my mum would like them! It’s chilled out, clean and a really up and down bob. I really enjoy the riffs during the chorus too.

https://open.spotify.com/track/6rlCtwow78KOeQFkSQhQwy?si=9c57d746f3ca4040

Indie

Blossoms – Joke About Divorce.

This gives me massive 60s vibes! F.U.N.K. The bassline in this song is amazing. Light and breezy and a feel great song for a summers day. Which is slightly odd due to the songs lyrical subject. But seriously wow.

Rickie Lee Jones – Ghostyhead (1997) is a daring blend of trip hop, downtempo, and moody electronics. Smoky vocals, urban grooves, and late-night atmosphere make it one of the most underrated reinventions of the 90s. How Does Rock Capture Anger Or Frustration?

Rock music doesn’t just talk about anger. It channels it into something amazing. Through the use of guitars, drums, bass and vocals that are emotionally charged. Frustration becomes immediate and physical.

That anger can explode or simmer. And quite often takes aims at people too. Differing rock styles capture different shades of that feeling but it is still there nonetheless.

Explosive, unfiltered rage

This is anger at its loudest and most direct to the point. Everything is cracking off at once, shouting vocals, distortion turned way up and a real sense that the band could lose control at any moment.

https://open.spotify.com/track/1fLlRApgzxWweF1JTf8yM5?si=cdc489ce26714a20

This type of rock feels like a pressure valve that is designed to allow people to let anger out in the most intense way imaginable.

Frustration and alienation

Anger does not always explode into view, sometimes it builds slowly through repetition and a sense of being misunderstood.

https://open.spotify.com/track/1gyee1JuFFiP476LQpRMYU?si=a7e170f89d3e4822

In this case anger feels less about shouting and more about a pressure that never releases at least not fully.

Personal betrayal and emotional anger

Rock has a unique way of zooming into relationships and turning anger into something raw and directed at one person and not the word.

https://open.spotify.com/track/6rUp7v3l8yC4TKxAAR5Bmx?si=da328decb9454df8

These songs mix raw emotion with confrontation, showing how hurt and anger go together in devasting fashion.

Political and societal anger

Rock has a long history of pushing back against authority, inequality, and control—turning frustration into something bigger than the individual.

Rock has a long history of pushing back against authority, inequality and control. Turning frustration into something much bigger than the band.

https://open.spotify.com/track/6GtX0jaNL8IjVQfrDBx81z?si=7034733034a143c9

In this form anger becomes something that is meant to directly challange and provoke thought.

Controlled anger and catharsis

Some rock songs don’t explode—they reflect. Anger is still there, but it’s shaped into something more thoughtful or resolved.

Sometimes rock likes to show the aftermath of anger, something with a little bit more thought and often resolved.

https://open.spotify.com/track/7q8iLIcpUdW2anOuWo4htn?si=1f4382baeb254918

These tracks show that anger can evolve and turn into reflection, acceptance and growth.

Closing thoughts

Rock is so effective at capturing anger because of how it manages to blend the emotion and the sound. The music carries the tension, while vocals and lyrics give that underflowing tension a meaning.

Sometimes that is controlled, othertimes it is explosive. It can be personal, political. Regardless frustration is turned into something powerful.

Iconic! I was reminded again of this song by our “From The Archives” post this week. The way they make rock so accessible really makes this song a hit. To think the drummer only has one arm too… Incredible.
