I wrote a Python script to convert & loudness-normalize my mp3 & m4a/mp4 files, retaining the metadata & art. Some thoughts:

* I’d no idea how ridiculously hacky the ID3 metadata standard was compared to mp4/xmp
* Audacity would be awesome if they had both a full-featured command-line client and SDKs *
* Working with Python packages pydub, mutagen, pyloudnorm & soundfile is fun, but ideally this could be all one great audio file package/SDK *

Poor schemas, poor cataloguing: why music tagging sucks

One common issue that many music enthusiasts face with their local music library is the tedious process of tagging. While tools like beets or MusicBrainz Picard can help streamline the process, there are still fundamental issues with the design of tags for music and the way they are applied. This not only makes exploring music more difficult, but it also limits the potential of our music collections and leaves many opportunities untapped.

The current state of music tagging leaves much to be desired. Tagging schemas are often incomplete, inconsistent, and incorrect, making it difficult to navigate music libraries and discover new music. This hinders the ability to find what you're looking for and prevents full exploration of the potential of music libraries.
