Although it looks like a painting, this record cover art for Thelonious Monk's amazing album Underground was not painted but photographed. The photograph was created by Steve Horn & Norman Griner and was shot at their studio, located in a townhouse off Third Avenue in New York City.

The cover features Thelonious Monk portrayed as a French Resistance fighter during World War II, a concept inspired by his friend and patroness, Pannonica de Koenigswarter, who had served in the resistance and appear to be in the background. The set was built and furnished for the photo shoot, and the final image includes props such as a gagged Nazi officer, a cow, hand grenades, liquors or wine bottles, a telephone, binoculars, fruits and cheese, explosives and a more for you to find here.

"Her big thing was that I was trying to make money off her name. On the contrary, she came to me for remixes, so who's making money off whose name?"—Junior Vasquez [speaking about Madonna Louise Ciccone]

"It just felt like all she was doing was coming to you for information or whatever you were into, so that she could use it,"—Shawn Dickerson [speaking about Madonna Louise Ciccone]

After several decades to reflect on the irreverent humour of "If Madonna Calls," the cultural icon seems to have finally gotten the joke.

Rewind: Junior Vasquez - If Madonna Calls

The ultimate bitch track. Junior Vasquez's '90s house gem captured a scandalous chapter in New York nightlife—and cut his friendship with Madonna short.

Song Title: Junkie Diva

"Everybody thinks it's about Amy Winehouse! Well, OK. Firstly, it's not about a specific person, it's more about the obsessive fan than about the diva. It's more about the way that people project what they want to see on certain figures, and the way that they live things vicariously through their heroes or idols, and they want to go places where they can't go themselves, literally or figuratively. But that's really what the song is about, and as far as who the diva is, when I was writing it, I was thinking about Billie Holiday."—Joe Jackson [form an Interview with Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 22 Oct. 2015]

"Digital recordings are perishable in their own right —far less stable, in fact, than recordings on magnetic tape. A damaged analog tape is not necessarily a lost cause: An engineer may be able to perform restoration work and get the recording to play. But when a digital medium is compromised, it is most likely gone. Many masters from recent decades are kept on hard drives, notoriously fragile mechanisms that may not function after sitting for years in a vault. Today, labels increasingly rely on digital-tape formats like LTO. But LTO is backward compatible for just two generations. Labels must either continually retransfer their archives or maintain outdated playback equipment.
All these problems are exacerbated by the structure of the music business, in which hundreds of labels have been consolidated into three huge ones, which in turn have been absorbed by global conglomerates. The necessity of safeguarding a sound-recording heritage may appear abstract to executives at a distant parent company, who may simply see an expense on a balance sheet marked “Storage.” "—Jody Rosen

"UMG maintained additional tape libraries across the United States and around the world. But the label’s Vault Operations department was managed from the backlot, and the archive there housed some of UMG’s most prized material. There were recordings from dozens of record companies that had been absorbed by Universal over the years, including several of the most important labels of all time. The vault housed tape masters for Decca, the pop, jazz and classical powerhouse; it housed master tapes for the storied blues label Chess; it housed masters for Impulse, the groundbreaking jazz label. The vault held masters for the MCA, ABC, A&M, Geffen and Interscope labels. And it held masters for a host of smaller subsidiary labels. Nearly all of these masters — in some cases, the complete discographies of entire record labels — were wiped out in the fire."—Jody Rosen
