“Extreme rainfall is projected to intensify as the climate warms, yet whether the greatest increases will occur in multi-day or single-day events remains uncertain. This knowledge gap is particularly pressing given recent catastrophic floods triggered by multi-day rainfall events, prompting the question of whether multi-day events could, in fact, intensify more than their daily counterparts, and by how much. This study addresses this question using an ensemble of 34 downscaled Earth System Models under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5), focusing on changes in extreme rainfall by the end of the century across ten regions of the contiguous United States. [Their] statistical framework evaluates model agreement, ensemble-mean changes, and the significance of these changes for both daily and multi-day rainfall extremes. Results show that extreme rainfall amounts are expected to increase for most regions and durations. The degree of intensification, however, depends strongly on event rarity and regional climate characteristics. Notably, in the U.S. western Gulf Coast region, very rare multi-day events (e.g., 500 year return period) are projected to intensify more than their daily counterparts, a phenomenon that could be explained by increased stalling of tropical cyclones, which can prolong heavy rainfall over multiple days. These results challenge the assumption that daily extremes dominate future risk and highlight the need to consider event duration when updating flood-hazard maps, design standards, and adaptation planning…”

✨ DOLOMITI Bikepacking DAY ONE

📍 Bressanone/Brixen ➡️ St. Magdalena

— 22.98km & 1,228vm —

Hello Pixelfed community 👋🏻 I wanted to try this out and figured I’d jump in the deep end, sharing my recent big adventure (as adventuring thru the 🏔️ by bike, skis, climbing or on foot is what I do) through the Dolomites.

This is an adventure I’ve been wanting to go on for several years so I could finally explore this range more in depth (I mean, I’ve been there once and had fallen in love right away: my favourite place on earth 💚).

The first day was mostly about getting to the Dolomites. Two train rides and a longer waiting time for the second one meant I had time for a little stroll through Innsbruck’s old town.

Once I finally arrived in Brixen, the adventure could begin… with a sufferfest of 1200m of vertical in one go. I mean, you have to get to the mountains before you can ride through them. So I did just that.

I got to Sankt Magdalena in the late afternoon. Unfortunately the clouds were hanging low so the famous panorama of the church with Sas Rigais and Furchetta behind were hidden from view.

I found a cozy and covered spot to have dinner just above the village… then the storm rolled in, and boy was I happy that I had a roof over my head. It meant I cut the ride shorter than I would have liked. But I had a safe spot to sleep.

Sometimes I write enormous blog posts about silly things I try and do. This is one of those times.

Ring O'Fire '24: Better sleep on it. - Rock Crawler

Ok, so this is a bloody huge blog post with about 21 and a half thousand words, so before attempting it, please make sure you’ve got a pot of tea ready and at least 2 packets of biscuits. Oh, and here are some hyperlinks to help you out: It happened. It seemed a long time away when I signed up for it at the start of the year, almost something I could ignore while I got my head down on... Read More Read More

Ran the #RingOFire. Got a lot of nasty blisters. This one is my favourite. Popped my #100km and #multiDay #running cherries on this one! 57k/107k/53k. Didn't pop my blisters though.

To carry a solar panel and a smaller powerbank or directly more power bank. Hrm.

Отправляемся в воскресенье.
