Llanelli man jailed for handbag robbery

Shadow turned to attack

Jake Dighton, 31, of Bridge Street, Llanelli, admitted robbery after targeting the woman late on Friday 20 June as she walked along Glenalla Road with colleagues.

The victim recalled noticing a shadow appear over her shoulder before Dighton forcefully grabbed her handbag, causing her to fall to the ground. Despite suffering cuts and bruises, she tried to chase him but lost sight of him as he fled.

CCTV evidence

Police launched an investigation and quickly identified Dighton thanks to local CCTV footage. He was arrested on suspicion of robbery and later pleaded guilty at Swansea Crown Court on 25 July.

On Friday 5 December, he was sentenced to three years and three months in prison.

“Predatory behaviour” condemned

Detective Constable Rhydian Davies from Dyfed Powys Police said:

“We welcome the sentencing of Jake Dighton; this was a traumatic incident for the victim who has been reliving the incident since that night.

Dighton’s predatory behaviour is completely unacceptable, and no one should fear walking the streets of their hometown.

I commend the victim for her bravery and the strength with which she supported our investigation and the court proceedings that followed.”

DC Davies praised the support shown by the victim’s family, friends and the wider Llanelli community, and thanked colleagues across Dyfed‑Powys Police for their joint work in bringing Dighton to justice.

“Is it worth getting stabbed?” – Swansea thugs jailed after terrifying city centre robbery

38‑year‑old Ceri Gibson, of no fixed abode, and 36‑year‑old Christopher Palmer, from Clase, Swansea, targeted a 43‑year‑old man on Page Lane behind St Helen’s Road late at night.

The pair launched a cowardly attack from behind, dragging their victim to the ground. One chillingly asked: “Is it worth getting stabbed over?” while the other rifled through his pockets and stole his mobile phone.

Fearing for his life, the man handed over cash from his other pocket after further threats that he would be stabbed if he resisted.

Facial recognition nailed them

The duo were quickly identified thanks to facial recognition technology and later convicted of robbery.

Gibson was handed an extended nine‑year sentence, while Palmer was jailed for five years.

Detective’s fury at “cowardly attack”

Detective Sergeant Griffiths said the case showed just how dangerous Gibson and Palmer were: “This was a violent robbery during which Ceri Gibson and Christopher Palmer convinced the victim that he was going to be stabbed if he did not hand over his valuable possessions to them.

“This could have happened to anyone. Gibson and Palmer were out on the streets looking for someone who was alone and vulnerable and then cowardly launched their attack from behind.

“This is the second time that these two defendants have been convicted of a robbery which they have committed together.

“These are not the sort of people who are welcome on the streets of Swansea. With hefty sentences for both of them, the city will be better off without their presence for years to come.”

Repeat offenders

Both men have long criminal records. Gibson has dozens of previous convictions including burglary, knife possession and a robbery committed with Palmer back in 2017.

The court heard the pair had prowled Swansea’s streets before, looking for vulnerable victims to rob.

Swansea safer without them

Judge Geraint Walters described the robbery as a “shameful act” carried out against a vulnerable man who stood no chance of defending himself.

With Gibson and Palmer now behind bars, police say Swansea is safer — and residents can be reassured that two repeat offenders are off the streets for years to come.

Llanelli man admits late-night robbery of woman walking home alone

A 31-year-old man from Llanelli has admitted robbing a woman of her handbag as she walked home alone after a night out with friends. The incident took place just before midnight on Friday 20 June, near Eastgate bus station, and ended with the victim being pulled to the ground on Glenalla Road.

Jake Dighton, of Bridge Street, Llanelli, pleaded guilty to robbery at Swansea Crown Court on Friday 25 July. He has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced later this year.

The court heard that the woman had been on the phone to her boyfriend when she first noticed Dighton nearby. She slowed down and crossed the road to create distance, believing he had gone in a different direction. Moments later, she felt her shoulder pulled back by the strap of her handbag and fell forward onto the pavement as Dighton ran off with her bag.

Despite suffering cuts and bruises, the victim attempted to chase him but lost sight of him. She returned home and contacted police.

Following a public appeal, Dyfed Powys Police carried out extensive CCTV and doorstep enquiries. Footage from the area helped officers track Dighton’s movements before and after the robbery. He was eventually found living in a tent in the grounds of St Elli’s Church, and was arrested and charged.

Police praised the victim’s courage and the community’s support during the investigation.

This is not the first time Dighton has faced serious charges for violence. In 2014, he was sentenced to six years in youth custody for a frenzied knife attack in Llanelli. According to a Wales Online report, Dighton slashed a man’s arm so severely it resembled “something out of a butcher’s shop,” inadvertently stabbing his own brother during the assault. The incident left the victim with long-term nerve and tendon damage requiring multiple surgeries.

A publicly viewable social media image of Dighton has been used to accompany this report, in the absence of an official custody photograph.
