Idea: Mudita Kompakt & Mudita Pure, but with kernel flashing & mods encouraged instead of shunned to enable folks to install those 2 apps they need to make the experience pleasant & put less friction to new users. I ‘get’ the idea of purposefully curating a set of applications to minimize distractions, but some of those users need to stay in contact with loved ones. I wouldn’t mind a monochrome e-paper device that encouraged more reading.
The Pure they seemed to purposefully put no information out on how to touch the Linux system it was built on despite publishing the source. The Kompakt appears like it might actually be Android instead of ‘just’ Linux (going off of how suspiciously OSM And the maps application looks). These should be freedom-oriented devices.
Hardware seems fine, if not expensive (but what can you do in non-mass-produced markets). Would be cool if they had one with a hardware keyboard instead of T9-like or touch screen only (I very much hesitate to call it QWERTY since it is a bad layout & going label-less on letter keys may make it more accessible to the millions of other layouts which is probably a big driver for touchscreen keyboards).
But back to the apps, the curated list does not overlap with the privacy message. SMS as the only way to DM someone? I mean ship with Conversations & let users choose their own servers while running cheaply a ejabberd instance with slim storage with both PGP & OMEMO covering end-to-end encryption. If users wanted, they could set up systems they could then drive thru a text CLI as well to offload functionality. Unlike a bad choice like Matrix or SimpleX, Conversations is very, very low on CPU/RAM & data usage suiting these devices’ specs. No 2FA / TOTP app? This is one of the primary uses of a phone to many. No mail app? This would be a primary source of distraction but something like K-9 could be configured to just not notify ever but you could dig thru to find an important message (also used as a form of 2FA in many cases) when needed. A feed reader would be the last obvious low-tech app that would prioritize users explicitly opting into what they are reading thru a feed aggregator or otherwise. With email, XMPP client, feed reader, 2FA, I could cover or script 85% of what I do with my phone that isn’t watching videos.
