Wrap up 2025
May 2025 part 2

To recap; we visited the green house at May 1st. On May 5th, at midday, we got a WhatsApp message from the house owner, where he informed us that he had taken all his personal stuff from the house and that we could have the house right away. Wow, that was fast! We were so happy and euphoric, but at the same time a bit unsure, because by then we hadn't met him or had the chance to make a proper phone call to discuss a contract. We trusted our gut feeling that everything would work out. So we jumped in the car, went to the shop to buy a fire extinguisher, safety shoes, helmet, masks, ... and some basic tools, and set off to start the next adventure: bringing the old farm back to life. 🏡
The first 10 days, we were occupied from morning to late evening clearing out the house, sorting what had to be disposed of and what could still be used. The only antique treasures we had found up to that point were the two old telephone sets and the nice kick sled.
Since it was still only around 10°C, even inside the house, Marc had to go up on the roof to check the chimney (and take the opportunity to replace the rotten ladder) so that I could make a fire in the large oven 🔥
Every day we drove the 75km stretch from the apartment in Rovaniemi to our house in Meltosjärvi. On one hand it was annoying to drive tha distace twice a day, but on the other hand it was good to be forced to stop working on the house. Also it was very nice to see how the Lake Iso Vietonen changed from entirely frozen to these very special Ice tubes.
Besides clearing and cleaning, the big goal was to repair the water pipes. We couldn't move in before that. All water pipes, the main valve/shut-off valve in the house, the distributor, the boiler, etc., everything was broken, destroyed by the frost, as the house had been left alone and unheated for the last 15 years. About that more in the next post...

Wrap up 2025
May, part 1
It was the first of may 2025 when we got a phone call. We should come that same day back to the village to visit a house. Ok... We rented another car, drove to Meltosjärvi and visited a green farmhouse. It was full of stuff and standing there unused since 16 years. But we knew, this is it! This has potential!

Wrap up 2025:
April 2025 2/2
We spent the second half of April in the Mökki, the holiday home of Manuela, a dear woman we had also met on our bike tour through Finland. These two weeks were very important for us. We were there again just the two of us, got back into our daily yoga routine, enjoyed the nature and the absolute silence next to a small, still frozen lake in the middle of a light forest 50 km south of Rovaniemi.
The house search did not pause, but had changed because of the lack of viewable objects to searching on all platforms online. It was exhausting and the fact that we still didn't had our own place, began to stress us out.
At the end of April, we decided to rent a small apartment in Rovaniemi, in order to be closer to shopping opportunities and public transportation, and no longer dependent on a rental car. The winter season was finally over, and thus the rental prices in the tourist town were correspondingly low.
With this move, the decision to mentally disconnect from the house search and return more to the mindset "the right object will come without us forcing it" was also made.

Wrap up 2025:
April 1/2
Early April 2025, we reached the Arctic Circle near Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland. The ground was still covered in snow and the lakes and rivers still entirely frozen.
After a big grocery shopping trip, we set off, driving for one hour westward to a tiny village somewhere in the middle of nowhere, between two small lakes.
A young couple, C&S from France, had invited us to their house in that village.
It's actually really funny how we found out about C&S.
Back in summer 2024, when we were cycling through Finland, we met a girl from Belgium. We cycled with her from Rovaniemi all the way to the North Cape. Along the way, she told us that the day before we met her, she had gotten to know a couple, cycling from France, and that they had spontaneously bought a house in Finland. Yes, it was exactly that couple at whose place we spent these first 10 days in April. It was with them that we basically started our emigration.
Actually we had planned to visit C&S only a couple of days and then go back for house-hunting from Rovaniemi towards Oulu. But when we were in this tiny village, exploring the nature with C&S, thaking and exchanging a lot with them, it became quickly clear that we wanted to find a house in that area.

In the next post, I will share the link of our video on youtube with you!
There we show more about the process of house-hunting... It was fun, stressful, exhausting, and almost a bit adventurous all in one. We saw quite some properties but by that time not the right one.
