CMH RECORDS RE-RELEASES CARL STORY'S "MOUNTAIN MUSIC" DIGITALLY FOR THE FIRST TIME

Musical Interlude: I love the 2000 film SONGCATCHER, about a female musicologist recording the songs of Appalachian mountain people. It had two soundtrack albums, one of actual vintage recordings that inspired the film, and another of "songs from and inspired by." Normally the latter makes me roll my eyes, but this time it was traditional mountain ballads performed by current country artists like Roseanne Cash, Gillian Welch, Emmylou Harris, Patty Loveless, and Deana Carter, with a couple original songs. This one knocked my socks off...a duet ballad between one of country's superstars and one of the film's actors, a then-unknown Emmy Rossum, as a dialogue between a mother and daughter. A song that deserves to be better known.
"When Love is New," performed by Dolly Parton and Emmy Rossum.

Musical Interlude: I'm a godless heathen, I freely admit it, But I do like some religious music. This is an old mountain hymn that I dearly love. Jean Ritchie wrote of singing this while caroling with her family in the Kentucky Appalachians. And about 15-20 years ago, my parents and I were invited to a Christmas hymn sing at a local old-order Mennonite church, and this was one of the hymns they did. (THAT was a fascinating cultural experience! I remember it fondly and would do it again in a heartbeat.) But most recordings I find these days are a modern arrangement that strikes me as cacophonous. It's nice to find an old-fashioned version.
I hear this and imagine snow-covered farms and tree-covered mountains...
"Brightest and Best," performed by the McLain Family Band.
Musical Interlude: I saw these folks at one of the first Old Time Music Festivals I attended, and fell in love. I love this song, which makes me think of my childhood, when we had willow trees in the front yard.
"Free a Little Bird," performed by Molsky's Mountain Drifters.
Musical Interlude: I recently got to see Sarah Kate Morgan play at the Baltimore Old Time Music Festival and was very, very impressed. Her mountain dulcimer technique is to die for, and her overall style is sublime.
"Cumberland Gap," performed by Sarah Kate Morgan.
