Early Christianity in Ancona: Santa Maria della Piazza
The Ancona Walking Tour includes a stop in front of the church of Santa Maria dell Piazza. Blind arcades shape the thirteenth-century faΓ§ade. Its portal is a jewel of medieval carving, while the upper register was struck by an earthquake. The Romanesque interior welcomes us in its sober simplicity. Through glass panels in the floor, we glimpse early Christian mosaics rich in symbolism, a baptismal well, and remains of ancient walls and frescoes. Black and white tesserae edging the steps leading up to an 1850s townhouse in the Park District of Glasgow. I suspect these are a later addition as the original steps would have been sandstone, but they are still a nice design touch.
