OccasionalDucksGood night at the Insomaniacs Ball - we didn’t stick it out to the bitter end as I’d hoped we would, but left some time around 1am, as not only were our dancers tiring (and busking nearly everything as there’s very little Cotswold we actually know!) but the numbers were thinning (probably 2/3 of the proper Cotswold dancers left before us) as a hard core settled into grind out the more obscure dances until dawn, and most of the musicians had left too so we were being asked to play things we didn’t know and then having to scratch around for someone who did. At that point discretion seemed the better part of valour.
Definitely a fun experience, and good for my “playing along quietly with things I don’t really know” skills.
While we only stayed a couple of hours later than most ales, it felt a bit different and if your a morris dancer wishing striking distance of Long Clawson and haven’t been you should certainly consider giving it a go.
Mild disappointment that the excellent cheese board didn’t include Long Clawson cheese though. :-P
About half an hour until we leave for the Insomaniacs Ball - because what better than an all-night session of Cotswold morris when you, um, barely dance/play any Cotswold? Fingers crossed it is going to be #Epic!
soaproot@croy The piano weighs a lot more too (not that I tried to calculate a ratio, just that I've often seen a penny whistle taken to street #MorrisDance performances but I have yet to see someone with a grand piano there).
After a significant hiatus the #Binghamton Morris Men had a practice today! Went over some of the small set dances we've been doing and started working out a new one. Looks promising.

The Hoodeners@JaneTomlinson Not many people know that the conflation of hoodeners (we don't dance) with customs such as #MorrisDance all started because an EFDSS fan asked a chap in Kent to make a *hobby* horse based on Abbots Bromley... but instead of a tourney horse (as seen in your video) he made one looking like the local *hooden* horse. This appeared at a 1939 #folkdancing event, and the founder of Folkestone's #Folklore Festival then chose the #hoodenhorse as a symbol for local dances, handbell-ringing and other folkie things. 🐴

The Upton Upon Severn Stick Dance
𝐉𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫A painting of morris dancers, sort of, from the creative mind of painter Sharon Eisley. The human guy is in Deer Creek kit (from Palo Alto, California); the bull is probably from Pipe and Bowl (Renaissance Faire team); I can't place the others, but Sharon was working from photographs from the San Francisco Dickens Fair, so they're probably from around here. I believe this is the five of wands from a not-yet-complete tarot deck.
It's called "Listen to Your Fire." I've also included the card hanging on the wall next to it. If anyone just has to have it on their wall, pop on over to her website and make the arrangements, or just look at the other cool paintings.
