It was reported stolen and there is no reason to believe that this did not occur. What seems more than a little surprising is that 'Belgrave Street' was given as the location of the theft rather than 'Belgrave Road' thus misdirecting any police investigation, presumably inadvertently. 'And it can only have been coincidental that #morganmcsweeney did not reveal his status to police nor did he report the loss to the permanent secretary at the #cabinetoffice !
Housing Secretary Steve Reed attempted to bat away speculation about the circumstances in which McSweeney lost his phone, claiming it had been stolen “maybe even over a year before the whole [Mandelson] situation arose”.
But it has now emerged that the phone was stolen on October 20, 2025, around a month after Mandelson was sacked as the ambassador to the US.
