This is part of a set of things I’ve been thinking about a bunch over the years. And the discussion here has me feeling compelled to try and get it down in some sort of semi-coherent form.

It seems to me this is part of a whole set of issues, which are somewhat interlinked and sometimes parallel, but also partially orthogonal to each other.
