UVA School of Architecture on Instagram: "Students in the SARC 5500: World Heritage Trail course presented their final work at the Robert H. Smith Center at Montalto, aka Monticello’s “upper campus,” envisioning new ways to connect Monticello and the University of Virginia’s Academical Village—together a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Taught by Lyle Solla-Yates, the interdisciplinary cohort of architecture and planning students shared research-driven proposals that foreground history, mobility, and public interpretation across this culturally layered landscape. Jane Kamensky, President of the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, Dean Malo A. Hutson, and Monticello partners joined the presentation. The students’ work is currently on display at Charlottesville City Hall.
Students:
Olivier Benghiat (MArch ’26), Rachael Buchanan (BUEP ’28), Chase Cartwright (BUEP ’27), Adam Stievater (BUEP ’26), and Cullen Whelan (MArch ’26).
Student Research Assistant:
Adan Youngblood (MArH '27)

Thanks to the good people at
#Monticello for the kind hospitality today. This is a difficult time to do public history and I find the dedication and service ethic admirable.
#preservation #educationResearching the Bell family of Charlottesville, formerly enslaved at Monticello by Thomas Jefferson, I was surprised to learn that their historic home is now a tall bank building on the Downtown Mall appraised at almost $15 million (number 5 on the linked map)
