"Monterey County Active Transportation Plan (ATP) will serve as a roadmap for making #Monterey County safer, more accessible, and more connected for people of all ages and abilities who #walk, #bike, or use other forms of #ActiveTransportation. This update builds on the County’s previous ATP, adopted in 2018, incorporating new analysis and community priorities and needs.

"Join the ATP Kickoff Meeting on June 24, 2026 at 6:00 pm. We seek your input and participation as we work together to improve #walking, #biking, and rolling throughout Monterey County. "

We haven’t been doing much night riding lately. After biking in to town to pick up a Father's Day card for two special dads, we have a fresh memory of one of our favorite things about night riding: There are usually far fewer cars on the roads!

Another favorite thing: Being prepared to easiy take theft-prone items in with us when we went inside the card store, thanks to having an Ortlieb Vario Lite hybrid backpack-bicycle bag. Having that terrific bag is only because of the kind generosity of Jeff Scully, Ortlieb USA LLC, who donated it in 2025 as part of a thoughtful care package of Ortlieb products, in support of our direct outreach by bike. https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations/acknowledgements-dress-up-challenge-prize-donors

Another favorite thing: The card store employee who welcomed us to bring our bike indoors. That’s especially appreciated because there’s no bike rack or well-lit, line-of-sight place to lock up.

Today’s bike ride followed an afternoon of #CalBike Policy Advisory Council meeting, then reviewing AB 2168 (ATP Reform) and SB 569 (Bike Lane Integrity), and other office tasks. Evening was garden work until dark. Outdoors is definitely our favorite place to be, no matter what we’re up to. (And yes, took our laptop outdoors for the meeting too.)

Thank you, dear earth, for renewing us without fail!

No town errands today, so our ride was simply in our rural area. We saw only one other person biking—a young man wearing a Salinas High School Cowboys Racing MTB team jersey. Had a nice chat, including about some spots where bIke lockers are needed. See some Cowboys history here: https://bikemonterey.org/category/children-and-teens/salinas-high-school-cowboy-racing-mountain-bike-team.

Monterey Bay Aquarium’s new CEO Jenny Gray (only the 2nd top exec since MBA established in 1984) was working on a master’s in #transportation engineering when she first visited MBA in 1989. She has a doctorate in #ethics, focused on issues involving #wildlife

From interview by Paul Rogers, published 6/6/26:

What can be improved upon at the Monterey Bay Aquarium? "They are world leaders here for a good reason. They’re incredible. There won’t be Earth-shattering changes. Nothing’s broken here. In fact, the exact opposite.”

The major challenge facing the world’s #oceans right now? “The big threats are #pollution — whether that’s #plastic or other pollution — and #ClimateChange, and over-#exploitation of the #ocean itself.”

As a charter member who had to drop membership as prices climbed, we also appreciated his question about admission cost. https://www.mercurynews.com/2026/06/06/new-leader-takes-the-helm-at-the-monterey-bay-aquarium/?share=lw6tehdtor6tt2i6aatb

From our yard recently, “sending” these blooms from our heart to @Kleen and @Weather_Rock_Wx, in gratitude for their June 2 and June 5 donations! How to donate, plus FAQs: https://bikemonterey.org/about/financial-donations.

About those blooms: Learn what we frequently do with lavender, and why we bought special thread at Slow Fiber, Monterey—better still, see a Salinas bike commuter we met when she was en route there June 5, to help her friend / the owner in that shop. https://bikemonterey.org/bike-buzz-17th-anniversary-edition.html

"What does the beginning of June mean for #cycling in your area?” The start of increasing tourism for summertime. Today a local man whose family has one Rad bike and whose other bicycles are, to his great satisfaction, Tern bikes, brought this Rad news to our attention. He’s bummed they don’t have ALL Terns. https://www.bicycleretailer.com/industry-news/2026/05/12/woman-files-wrongful-death-suit-against-rad-power-bikes-after-fire-kills

That Rad news is another reason we’re grateful that two extraordinary bike industry leaders — Larry Pizzi and Dale Aguas — steered us in the right direction. Years ago Larry told us about Bosch batteries; and in 2024, Dale of @ternbicycles (which use Bosch batteries) pointed us to a #TernBicycles model very well suited to our needs, the #TernNBD. #Monterey Bay #LocalBikeShop Current eBikes assembled our Tern NBD P8i, and also provides 24 months of unlimited Standard Tune-ups + ongoing support and care.

We’re so glad to have the quality of Bosch and Tern, and also very happy with Current’s service. https://sfba.social/@bikemonterey/116644390356044137
