Are there any monster collecting/taming games where instead of abusing monsters as instruments of war to fight for your cowardly character, you get to like make friends with monsters and be nice to them without being exploitive?

Imagine if (in real life) preserving wildlife meant capturing wild birds and forcing them to fight to the death against roaming ecologists.

Closest I can think of is Endless Ocean on Wii (pet fish to fill out a compendium) or maybe playing Wingspan on switch (but the latter feels like a cope out)
