Puede llegar a pesar más de 2.000 kilos, convirtiéndose en el pez óseo más pesado del mundo. A pesar de su tamaño colosal, se alimenta principalmente de medusas y otros organismos gelatinosos. Lo curioso es que suele flotar cerca de la superficie, tomando «baños de sol» para regular su temperatura después de bucear en aguas profundas.

A sunfish mural on the side of the Chemistry building of Glasgow University where it faces the Zoology building across a narrow lane. Sunfish are the largest bony fish in the world, and can reach the size, and weight, of a small car. In the warmer summer months, they can occassionally be found off the West Coast of Scotland.
