A Mohua (Yellowhead) scans around for insects then jumps from its perch to go on the hunt. They're quite small, and that yellow throat and head can be hard to see in dappled sunlight when they're up high in the trees. Lovely little birds, though.

Quick pop at Rawhiti Cave before leaving Golden Bay. Impressive. A cathedral of stalactites, truly amazing. Unfortunately very hard to photography with a smartphone, the pics are not even close to the majesty of the place.

Hike on Kaituna Track in Kahurangi national park to camp in the forest (okay I admit, I did not want to pay accommodation every night, especially for sleeping in my car, and tramping is the only hack I found to have a free night in Golden Bay).
The track is actually quite narrow and the surrounding steep and woody/rocky. Not ideal to put a tent. Found a (nice) spot on the Trap Line after the Fork, just under the giant mushroom. Don't know if it is the mana of the forest (or the mushroom) but I slept like a baby, like... 12 hours!

Devils Boots. Found it randomly on the drive to a hike's car park. Did not do the hike eventually (I planned to camp up there and overnight stay was forbidden at the car park), so the rocks actually made the drive worthy.

Te Waikoropupū Springs, near #Tākaka. One of the clearest and purest freshwater in the... World ? Don't really remember. But it's beautiful. And peaceful.

Here’s a story on #RNZ of a project working to increase the numbers of mohua, the NZ yellowhead, in part of southern Aotearoa. Mohua are an endemic NZ bird (in an endemic bird family), once abundant through the South Island, but now very rare, and endangered. My wife Laura is working with a team on a high tech way of monitoring mohua populations, and individuals, with a network of audio recorders.

Our Changing World – Keeping an eye on the Makarora mohua

Mohua yellowheads were once common in Aotearoa forests, but bush clearance and introduced predators mean they're now rare in the ngahere. Claire Concannon meets a team of scientists and conservationists keeping an eye on a remnant mohua population at Makarora.
