Join the Andromeda Electric Orchestra’s Nebula Ensemble, under the direction of Alfred Surenyan, for “New Sonic Horizons”, featuring new string-quartet instrumentation combining acoustic violin and acoustic cello with 6- and 5-string electric violins—merging classical clarity with a wider electric palette of color, range, and atmosphere.

‘The Vinyl Factory: Reverb’ is a multi-sensory experience delving into vinyl culture across music, fashion, art and the social realms

Two of Melbourne’s leading cultural institutions — RISING and ACMI — have announced The Vinyl Factory: Reverb, an ambitious new exhibition opening on May 22 to the end of August.

Originally staged at 180 Studios, the happening brings together highlights from The Vinyl Factory Collection alongside new commissions celebrating two decades of creative collaboration.

Visitors can expect a rich program of major screen-based works, immersive installations, and deep listening experiences, offering a dynamic exploration of how music continues to shape contemporary culture, especially when heard on glorious vinyl, and a cleverly curated ‘Listening Room’.

Spanning continents, cultures and disciplines, Reverb will see works from some of the 21st century’s leading artists and figures who have worked across video, sound and contemporary culture, including German EDM and sound art innovator Carsten Nicolai; celebrated Canadian media artist Stan Douglas; British-Nigerian filmmaker and visual artist Jenn Nkiru; American fashion visionary Virgil Abloh; London-based photographer and video artist Gabriel Moses; and South African artist William Kentridge, amongst other innovators.

Said RISING Artistic Director, Hannah Fox in a recent media release: “Reverb captures the force of music as a cultural engine — how it shapes movements, identity and lasting communities, before adding that “partnering with ACMI to present the exhibition extends RISING’s practice of moving beyond the stage to create new encounters between artists and audiences.”

Being a bit of a party DJ and occasional radio presenter myself, I may have to sell one of my Stantons for a plane ticket to this thing, but it is important to say that this exhibition is not solely for DJs or vinyl purists. While physical records play a central part, the event/exhibition is designed for anyone interested in contemporary culture, the visual arts and music history, promising to connect genres, eras and global audio/visual scenes.

Experiencing the full exhibit ought to be fun and enlightening, showing how sound influences unique identity, helps harness creativity, and is accessible and engaging well beyond dedicated vinyl lovers.

My parents have been holding on to an old set of piano books, originally purchased by my great-grandfather. The second volume is modern music, and includes composers such as Brahms and Tchaikovsky 😂

Announcing the “Vanguard of Opera’s Future”

It’s official —

I’m honored to have been selected as one of the international cohorts under Performing Arts Laboratory’s Opera Camp™ Composition & Libretto Program, helping to create a new one-act opera!

I am one of “six international creators selected for the highly competitive inaugural 2025-2026 cohort of the Opera Camp™ Composition & Libretto Program. Chosen from a staggering 425 applications spanning 68 countries (after more than 96k people reached globally), these composers and librettists represent the pinnacle of global talent, tasked with a singular mission: to co-create the future of opera.”

The two Opera Masters from this selection process will create their new one-act opera, which will be premiered in its entirety in Bloomington, IN, and I will join with four other co-creators to collectively create a second one-act opera that will possibly get workshopped at the same Bloomington Opera Camp. Both one-act operas will join the CommunityOperaScores™ catalog, making them available for rental by opera companies and performing arts institutions worldwide, ensuring these organizations can serve their communities by offering high-level artistic practices available for everyone.

Of the selection criteria, Maestro Diego Barbosa-Vásquez, Creator and Artistic Director of the Opera Camp™, said:

“We weren’t just looking for exceptional artists; we were seeking pioneers with the unique vision and collaborative spirit to build a new, community-centric model for the Opera and the Performing Arts. This cohort embodies that transformative potential.”

One U-bahn stop away there's a Cash Converter type of shop that sells second hand TVs, Playstations, DVDs and the rest, but this week they happened to have a load of 20th Century composition on vinyl going for a euro a disc: German, Austrian, Czechoslovakian, Finnish and American and apparently hardly played. One is even still it its shrink wrap.

A nice little haul.
