East-West is the second album by the American blues rock band the Butterfield Blues Band, released in 1966 on the Elektra label.[a] It peaked at No. 65 on the Billboard pop albums chart, and is regarded as highly influential by rock and blues music historians.

...the inclusion of two all-instrumental extended jams at the instigation of Bloomfield following the group's successful appearance at the Fillmore in San Francisco during March alongside Jefferson Airplane. Both reflected his love of jazz, as the blue note-laden "Work Song" featuring harmonica by Butterfield had become a hard bop standard, and the title track "East-West" used elements of modal jazz as introduced by Miles Davis on his ground-breaking Kind of Blue album. Bloomfield had become enamored of work by John Coltrane in that area, especially his incorporation of ideas from Indian raga music. - Wikipedia

Blow Thru Your Mind by Unity, released on E.P.I. Records in 1974.

Allmusic review:

In December 1973, Byron Morris' band Unity entered a studio in White Plains, NY, and recorded its first LP, Blow Thru Your Mind. ...A major departure from the dissonant free jazz that Morris explored on 1969's Unity session, Blow Thru Your Mind contains modal post-bop that is melodic and relatively accessible. This is a very spiritual album; a lot of spirituality goes into the solos of Morris and trumpeter Vincent McEwan, as well as the ethereal vocals of female singer Jay Clayton (who is featured on tracks like "Ether," "Reunion," and "Transcendental Lullaby"). Blow Thru Your Mind is enthusiastically recommended to anyone who is seriously into modal jazz."

JuJu is the fifth album by American jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter. It was released in July 1965 by Blue Note Records. It features a rhythm section of pianist McCoy Tyner, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Elvin Jones, all of whom had worked extensively with Shorter's fellow tenor saxophonist John Coltrane.

Writing a retrospective review in AllMusic, Stacia Proefrock avers that the use of Coltrane's rhythm section "bolstered" criticism that Shorter was "a mere acolyte of John Coltrane". Proefrock goes on to say that "The truth is, though, that Elvin Jones, Reggie Workman, and McCoy Tyner were the perfect musicians to back Shorter." Proefrock concludes that the album "blooms with ideas, pulling in a world of influences and releasing them again as a series of stunning, complete visions." - Wikipedia

It's Time! is an album recorded by a group led by American saxophonist Jackie McLean recorded in 1964 and released on the Blue Note label.

It's Time! Review by Thom Jurek

...The music was written entirely by either Tolliver or McLean and walks the line between modal post-bop and free jazz. It came hot on the heels of McLean's first forays into these waters on 1963's One Step Beyond and Destination Out!. There is more to it than that, of course; chordal improvisation still plays a large part in the music on this fine record. Hancock's solo on the opening "Cancellation" is the most angular thing here, and the tempo is simply breathtaking...

Doin' the Thang! is the debut album by jazz pianist Ronnie Mathews featuring trumpeter Freddie Hubbard recorded for the Prestige label in 1963.

Alex Henderson of AllMusic said "the LP's focus is modal post-bop and non-soul-jazz hard bop. But even though the material isn't soul-jazz, Mathews' quintet is certainly soulful... Hubbard, who was only 25 when Doin' the Thang was recorded, brings a lot to the session – not only fire, guts, and passion, but also a big, highly appealing tone"

This week's #ThursdayFiveList theme is #GenreQuintessance - five tracks that perfectly represent a single genre, or pick five different genres and choose one track that perfectly represents each.

I'm going with different genres of #jazz. You could consider this a #JazzStarterPack. Get your kid these five "vinyls" to play on their Crosbley vinyl player and they will be the coolest kid in the dorm. Classmates will be beating down the door to ask for dates. 😎

The Real McCoy is the seventh album by jazz pianist McCoy Tyner and his first released on the Blue Note label. It was recorded on April 21, 1967, two years after Tyner's departure from the John Coltrane Quartet and during a difficult period in which Tyner considered leaving jazz and taking a day job as a cab driver.[6] It features performances by Tyner with tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Ron Carter, and former Coltrane Quartet drummer Elvin Jones. Producer Alfred Lion recalls the recording session as a "pure jazz session. There is absolutely no concession to commercialism, and there's a deep, passionate love for the music embedded in each of the selections." - Wikipedia
