Here is how I build my assemblage boxes. I don't worry about cutting 45° angles to fit the 4 sides together because I don't have a reliable way to cut those kinds of angles accurately.
Before I start painting the box I tape off the bottom inside so I can have a clean surface to glue the bottom inside floor piece wood against wood.
I like my art to hang flush to the wall so I add four sides of stand off pieces of wood that I can also glue the back of the box to.
I usually use a clean piece of MDF for the back but this time I had a piece of botched laser engraved MDF I decided to use. The other side is smooth and clean.
I usually add some nails to add a little extra reinforcement to the sides that were glued together then counter sink them and fill the holes with wood putty then sand the surface smooth.
I usually paint the outside of the box frame but this time I'm thinking of glueing pieces of pages from an old book on the outsides. We shall see. 🙂
