Soul Sounds by the O'Jays, released in 1967 on Minit

Searing early work by The O'Jays -- sounding quite different here than on their later Philly hits! This early album has the group working in a style that was much more in a rough soul harmony style -- sung with an incredible depth, and recorded with backings that really let the vocals come to the forefront of the tracks! Some of the cuts are in a deep soul mode, others are more upbeat and Northern soul-styled -- but the whole thing's great, and the album's about as classic a set of 60s soul as you can get! Titles include their seminal tracks "Working On Your Love" and "Lipstick Traces", plus "Crack Up Laughing", "A Blowing Wind", "Stand In For Love", "It Won't Hurt", and "Hold On". - Dusty Groove
