#statstab #369 Don't Trust Internal Meta-Analysis

Thoughts: I don't agree with all the assumptions, but interesting to know how bad these can be.

[73] Don't Trust Internal Meta-Analysis - Data Colada

Researchers have increasingly been using internal meta-analysis to summarize the evidence from multiple studies within the same paper. Much of the time, this involves computing the average effect size across the studies, and assessing whether that effect size is significantly different from zero. At first glance, internal meta-analysis seems like a wonderful idea. It increases...

Sam Wilson and Joaquin Torres deserved better

Also, I still stand by my original feelings/perception of Sam’s character the first time I read his (silver age) comic book debut: It’s amazing that a Black superhero had such a grounded, grassroots background. I really loved his community helper / social worker origins.

And ever since his first MCU appearance in Winter Soldier, I always side-eyed the neo-lib, rah-rah-rah, military revising of his classic origins. I thought CA: Civil War was a good movie, but he politically annoyed me in that too (despite Mackie playing the character well).

I wouldn’t have minded so much if Brave New World took a more anti-war, Metal Gear Solid approach to the military and its socio-political effect on Wilson’s character. But it didn’t, and it was more of the same.

Side note: please stop sabotaging BHM with stuff like this. I feel like there have been a myriad of weird, anti-Black (or poisonous anti-minority things) that were released VERY SPECIFICALLY in Feb for the past several years (including the pre-corona times) made just to upset people.
——
I’m still processing this movie btw. It’s still in my homework to-do list to write a proper review. I just…there was a lot of mistakes made. It will take time.

Sometimes it feels as if fandom adores characters that “read as Black” (or who are AA-coded) more so than characters who are ACTUALLY Black like those in the Pan-African spectrum.

ie: Elseba (Wicked), Jazz (Transformers), Shadow (Sonic 3 film), Knuckles (Sonic games) or Magneto (X-men)

Edit: This “truth” is based off not just my “perception” of what many people in #fandom want. Or rather, what mainstream media / mainstream storytelling tells (non-BIPOC) geeks & nerds they’re supposed to want. It’s also based off my observation of which characters fans tend to gravitate to. And it seems exceedingly rare for people to naturally stan characters who look like me within larger franchises.

Unpopular Opinion Alert: Sonic 3 Edition. No Spoiler Special

I really wish another actor played Dr. Eggman / Ivo Robotnik. Or at least, all the “zany” humor was toned down a bit, and Eggman came across as being more serious. Or maybe more of a menacing figure with bits of dark humor thrown in.

I love the live action Sonic trilogy very much, I really do. They hold an odd place in heart as far as game-to-film adaptions go because I grew up with the Sonic series as a child. Or so to speak. And to see 3 successful films become so large within mainstream fandom AND cinema, fills me with joy. I’m mostly happy with the fact that the writing is actually pretty solid amongst all 3 movies.

But not a single one of them did I watch for Jim Carrey. Nope. I won’t deny his on screen presence adds a sort of playful lightheartedness that actually is present in some of the games. And as a comedic performer, his antics are sometimes funny. I won’t deny that at all. But frankly, that shit needs to be toned the fuck down.

Seriously, there are SO. MANY. SCENES. where I felt I wasn’t watching Dr. Robotnik at all. I was just waiting for Jim Carrey’s nonsense to end. Like, I know Eggman could be goofy at times. I’m not saying there shouldn’t be comedic acknowledgement of that, regardless of the media where he (Eggman) displays more whacky behavior. But there has to be a better balance of his personality.

At the end of the day, I really don’t watch and enjoy these movies because of Jim Carrey. I watch them because I want to see live action Dr. Robotnik and some famous comedian actor (who I admittedly DID grow up watching in the 90s/early 2000s) named Jim Carrey only HAPPENS to be playing him.
