Sweden to Contribute Minesweeper to NATO's Mine Clearing Mission

SNMCMG1, a multinational force consisting of mine clearance vessels from NATO allies,

A friend is involved in a project training rats to sniff out mines for clearance. The rats are too light to trigger the mines, but bloody good at finding them, when there's a yummy reward in it for them.

Being a vegan, I was pretty concerned about this at first. But my friend says the rats are well cared for - as the essential workers they are - their bills are covered for housing, food, healthcare etc, and they have a retirement home to live out their natural life.

"This is a new campaign, starting right now, to help save Ukrainian lives during this terrible war by funding robots that can clear mines."

Even a highly accurate clock is wrong occasionally. This is a classic example of a solution (robots!) in search of a problem.

Instead of funding boondoggles that help corporations develop yet more proprietary tech, why not donate to some of the well-established mine-clearing methods?
