Really good interview with Mieko Kawakami and the two translators (Laurel Taylor and Hitomi Yoshio) of "Sisters in Yellow".

I loved this re. translating:
"There’s a chapter narrated primarily from Yeongsu’s point of view, and he mentions that the other kids called him a piece of goldfish shit (kingyo no fun). I was quite taken with this description, but in the editing process, Hitomi pointed out it was idiomatic—a piece of goldfish shit is a hanger-on. This, however, is one of those points where I think translation creates a richness—what is idiomatic for one language becomes an evocative phrase in another (Anyone who’s ever owned goldfish immediately has a vivid image of what a goldfish mid-bowel-movement looks like.), and Hitomi agreed."

#miekokawakami'n #kaikkirakastavaisetyössä on 1. kirja, joka häneltä on suomennettu ja saa odottamaan seuraavia. Se kertoo tarinan yksinäisestä oikolukijafreelancerista ja hänen kohtaamistaan ihmisistä. Kirjassa ei tapahdu paljon, mutta toisaalta tapahtumat pääsevät kuitenkin yllättämään.

Kirjan luettuani tein Miekolle tynkäartikkelin Wikipediaan. Kirjan mainitsen myös ensi viikolla julkaistavassa kolumnissani, joka käsittelee freelancereita. Kolumnin kirjoitin friikkupohjalta, joten olin asian äärellä monella tavalla.

Se, ettei työasioita voi pohtia työkavereiden kanssa vaatii yksinyrittäjältä aktiivista verkostojen ylläpitoa. Kolumniin sain arvokkaita ideoita Fedi-keskusteluista, mutta myös lähipiiriltäni. Tuntuu pahalta, että he joutuvat tekemään vuokseni vapaaehtoistyötä, joka kuuluisi oikeasti ammattilaisille, mutta minkäs teet. Palkkioni on niin pieni, etten voi itse kustantaa oikolukijaa, saati neljää!
