The Al-Aqsa Mosque closed to worshippers: the first time since 1967.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem has been closed to worshippers during the Eid al-Fitr. It is the first time since 1967, when Israel occupied the Old City. Israeli authorities have informed the Islamic Waqf, the body that administers the site, of their intention to extend the closure beyond the holiday. The official reason is the “security situation” linked to the war with Iran. Twenty-five Waqf employees are allowed inside the complex, shift by shift. The Middle East Eye reports that Israeli forces have installed cameras in the prayer halls, including the Dome of the Rock.

The foreign ministers of eight countries — Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, Jordan, Pakistan, and Qatar — issued a joint statement: “Israel has no jurisdiction over the occupied East Jerusalem or its Islamic and Christian holy sites.” The closure violates international law and the historical status quo of the site. Aouni Bazbaz of the Waqf told Middle East Eye that he fears the measure will become permanent.

The same morning, Loris De Filippi, a health specialist with UNICEF, told Radio Cusano that “talking about a truce is misleading.” Since the ceasefire, October 2025, 700 Palestinians have been killed. 77% of the population is in a food crisis. Of the 272 trucks of aid needed, only 36 have arrived. De Filippi described the Board of Peace as “a very serious international precedent that could flatten the function of the UN” and Gaza as “a laboratory for the destruction of international law.”

The war with Iran is the framework within which these measures find public justification. Al-Aqsa closed for security reasons. The crossings closed for security reasons. The word “truce” is in the vocabulary, closed on the facts.

More than two weeks since Israel and the US attacked Iran, inflicting "death and destruction from the sky all day long" as US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth said, it seems that the decision to go to war was founded on two major miscalculations.

One is almost entirely an American one regarding the possibility of toppling the Iranian ruling establishment, and the other is an Israeli misreading of #Hezbollah and its potential response.

In addition, the results of the 12-day war and the recent demonstrations in #Iran and subsequent violent crackdown led #Israel and the #US to believe that there was a golden opportunity to topple the #Iranian government.

A few days ago, I was walking with a friend through the tents in al-Mawasi, southern #Gaza. We were heading to a small cafe I have frequented since my roof became fabric.

The ground beneath us was mud, the winter air heavy, and the faces around us heavier still. We were talking about the formation of the #US-led “Board of Peace”, in a phase of the so-called ceasefire that is supposedly defined by stability and reconstruction.

At that exact moment, the sound of an explosion tore through the air. We stopped talking, and I found myself asking: how is this a ceasefire? How can peace be declared while explosions still echo above our heads?

#Iran's #military on Wednesday vowed to strike #US and #Israel's #banks and economic centres in the region, after overnight attacks hit a bank in #Tehran.

"Last night, the American and Zionist terrorist army, after failing in their#military objectives, targeted one of the country's banks," a spokesperson for the military's central operational command, Khatam al-Anbiya.

"People in the region should not be within a one kilometre radius of the banks."

In the space of 10 days, #Iran has closed the Strait of #Hormuz, stopped oil and gas production along the Gulf, and created a global #oil crisis several times the magnitude of the 1973 oil crisis. The loss of oil - 20 million barrels a day - equals all the oil stoppages from 1978 to 2022 combined.

It has made a mockery of the #US promise to protect Gulf shipping lanes. Gulf states are seeking private foreign #military specialists to support their operations, including radar operators, ground maintenance crews, ground security teams, and electronic warfare specialists to provide protection during active operations. They are also seeking pilots.

40 countries gathered in The Hague on Wednesday to discuss coordinated measures aimed at enforcing international law in #Palestine, as governments warn that #Israel’s expanding settlement activity in the occupied #WestBank amounts to de facto annexation.

The meeting, co-chaired by #SouthAfrica and #Colombia and convened under the umbrella of #TheHagueGroup, brought together governments from across the #GlobalSouth and beyond to seek ways to translate political statements into concrete state action.

The Hague Group was established to coordinate international legal responses to Israel’s policies in the occupied #Palestinian territories and its #genocide in #Gaza.

[#Israel taking advantage of Iran war to further Gaza genocide]

As the #US- Israel war on #Iran began last week and #Gaza’s crossings were shut, panic spread through the densely populated enclave, raising fears of a famine returning.

#Palestinians rushed to markets to stock up on essentials, as soaring prices and shortages of key items, particularly vegetables, signalled the impact of the closures.

Gaza depends almost entirely on border crossings for the entry of food and essential goods, meaning any sudden closure is quickly reflected in local markets and household budgets.

Iran has ability to prolong war on #US and #Israel, says top #Iranian military expert

The key, he argued, would be reducing the number of missiles fired in each attack. “If #Iran keeps the volume of each barrage below 50 missiles, it can prolong this war for weeks,” said Mahmoudian, an expert on Iran’s #military and regional policy.

“Iran has no problem with the number of missiles and possesses a significant stock of projectiles, especially now that the battlefield has expanded across the #MiddleEast and it can rely on a large part of its arsenal, including short-range missiles.”

However, scaling down attacks would also reduce their impact, he noted.
