I'm very happy to announce that thanks to a donor who wishes to remain anonymous, I have in my hands a FriendlyElec NanoPi M6 - in this configuration, a tiny fanless desktop #microPC based on the Rockchip RK3588S processor.

I've had my eye on this device to fill the role of ultraportable desktop PC, especially in the event my laptop ever breaks or is lost/stolen, which would instantly render me unable to work if I didn't have a backup.

because of this generous gift, I'll be able to put the #NanoPi M6 to the test, and answer my top-of-line question: just how usable is this device as a light-duty desktop PC running Linux right now, in 2026? how well is the hardware supported? will I have problems getting work done?

I'm looking forward to having answers to all that and more. be sure to keep an eye on the Peertube channel @surfhosting.cc in the coming weeks and months ... and thank you so much to my donor, you know who you are!

GPD MicroPC handheld computer now available for pre-order with Intel N250 or Core i3-N300 processor options

The GPD MicroPC 2 is a portable computer that looks like a tiny laptop, but it’s really designed to be held in your hands so you can use your thumbs to type. With a 7 inch, 1080p touchscreen display and a processor based on Intel Alder Lake-N architecture, it’s a big upgrade over the original GPD MicroPC that launched in 2019 with a 6 inch, 720p non-touch display and an Intel Gemini Lake […]

Yes, I am aware of the irony that is buying a fanless compuer and then constructing and printing a fan housing to enclose the whole thing.

But yeah - it keeps it pretty cool even if I double the CPUs TDP settings in cases where a little more oomph is needed. And it looks cool!

GPD MicroPC 2 hits Indiegogo for $495: Handheld computer with Intel N250 processor and a QWERTY keyboard

The GPD MicroPC 2 is a little computer that looks a lot like a laptop, but it’s designed to be used more like a palmtop. Hold it in  two hands and you can reach your thumbs across the QWERTY keyboard for 2-finger typing. But you can also twist the 7 inch FHD touchscreen display and fold it down over the keyboard for use in tablet mode.

First unveiled earlier this month, the little computer […]

GPD MicroPC 2 is portable computer with a 7 inch display, Intel N250 processor and a thumb keyboard

Six years after releasing the original GPD MicroPC as a palm-sized computer aimed at IT professionals, GPD is bringing back the form factor with a new model sporting a bigger screen, faster processor, and more storage.

After unveiling the new GPD MicroPC 2 in June, GPD has now posted a preview for an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign set to begin on July 10th. Backers will be able to reserve […]

So someone in FLOSS #DeltaChat group said #ARM #SBCs are terrible at computation power. And that a #miniPC has much better computation power comparing to something like #RaspberryPi. I had plans for a #homeserver and I wanted to use my #LibreComputer #Alta and utilize its #npu.

Libre Computer boards have really good prices comparing to the performance they provide comparing to other ARM SBCs such as #RPi. However, comparing them with a mini or even #microPC, an old micro PC provides better computation power.

LibreComputer #RenegadeElite features a #Rockchip #rk3399, 4GB DDR4 and costs 76 USD:

https://libre.computer/products/roc-rk3399-pc/

On the other hand, this renewed #HP #EliteDesk is 100 USD and with far better specs:

https://www.amazon.com/HP-EliteDesk-Mini-Desktop-Computer/dp/B08L9NB7RD?rnid=2257851011&th=1

Maybe it's not fair compare a renewed product with a brand new one. But it seems for having a homeserver to #selfhost things, if we factor out power usage, an old mini PC is better than a new ARM SBC.

However, if we also consider power usage, the abovementioned LibreComputer board consumes only 15 W under full load. And the old Ryzen 5 on that HP mini PC has a TDP of 35 W. This affects running cost of your homeserver and also the cost for the #UPS. But for myself, there isn't a big deal between 15W and 35W.

Edit: Comments or advises are very welcome!

Edit2: On second thought, I won't go for second hand or renewed. I want to use them as servers and this means 100% uptime. And I doubt second hand ones will survive, especially given the more power they consume which generates heat. And since my budget for a homeserver is 100 USD, ARM SBCs seem to be the only choice. I can research more though.

Okay so I need to make my own split mechanical keyboard. But I want my keyboard to have dual functions. Both a keyboard and a "micro" PC. After long discussions in Rust Offtopic Matrix room and then Rust Embedded room, I think it's a good idea to use Milk V Duo as the processor for my keyboard. And then add video output(HDMI), speaker/buzzer, microphone and Wifi. A shortcut on the device will switch between micro PC and ordinary keyboard.

An advantage of sophogo sg2002 SoC is that the TRM is fully available in English. This will be useful when I want to enter kernel development later. For now I will just do Linux on it.

A Milk V Duo with 512MB RAM and with Wifi costs only 18 USD.
