In 1853, pioneering American sculptor Harriet Hosmer met poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and proposed an unusual artistic collaboration: a cast of their interlocked right hands.
Elizabeth Browning agreed on one condition—that Hosmer complete the casting herself, rather than her studio assistants. The sculpture captured the love between the Brownings, who had eloped to Italy seven years earlier
