After 60+ years, the common diabetes drug metformin has been found to unexpectedly affect the brain.
A new study shows it targets the protein Rap1 in the ventromedial hypothalamus, activating SF1 neurons to help lower blood glucose — and it works at much lower concentrations in the brain than in the body.
Promising findings that could lead to better treatments for glucose control and possibly brain protection.

After 60 Years, Diabetes Drug Revealed to Unexpectedly Affect The Brain

Metformin has been prescribed to people with type 2 diabetes to manage blood sugar for more than 60 years, but scientists haven't been exactly sure how it works - until now.

Researchers at Baylor College of Medicine published a study in Science Advances today revealing that metformin targets the Rap1 protein in the brain's ventromedial hypothalamus to lower blood sugar, overturning 60 years of medical consensus. #Science #Metformin #Health #Medicine #Research

This brief note highlights a discovery about metformin influencing brain processes, not solely peripheral metabolic functions. For mental health professionals, the finding implies a potential link between pharmacological interventions for metabolic conditions and central nervous system pathways, which may inform considerations about holistic patient care and comorbidity management in mood and cognitive health.

A major discovery reveals that metformin works not just in the body, but in the brain. By switching off a key protein and activating specific neurons, the drug lowers blood sugar through a previously hidden pathway, opening new doors for diabetes treatment.

My #endocrinologist still can't make up their mind whether I have #diabetes type 1 or type 2 because #COVID19 gave me diabetes. They switched me from #insulin to #metformin and it's working pretty well. They plan to add some #glp1 agonist at some point down the road. Not sure about that though. I know that both insulin and #Semaglutid are hormons that are native to the body. But I just feel (maybe irrational) apprehension towards drugs like #ozempic. Any fellow #diabetic got some experiences to share?

@unchartedworlds @EricCarroll No, that's right, and it is super cheap.

It's really interesting that #metformin seems to have antiviral effects, given the reduction in viral load reported there. I wonder what other viruses it effects similarly?

I guess there was a study that claimed Metformin wasn’t helpful with covid in people who are not obese. This looks like a good rebuttal with some valid points about why the study wasn’t so good.
