I have a great little app on my phone called Merlin - it’s basically Shazam for bird song. Always fun to see who’s back in the area - today is the first time this Spring for the chickadees.

Today's fun discovery; the Merlin Bird ID app. Now, every time I hear some bird calls, I whip it out to take a recording.

It identifies well even against strong winds, loud wind chimes, and shouty kids.

Let's see if I can haul my arse out of bed to record the dawn chorus this weekend.

And the answer's... Yes! 😊 I didn't get into my groove until the 32 second mark, but that was me. I'll attach a screenshot below proving I'm a bird whisperer! 🤣 #merlinbirdid #merlin #birdid #birdsoftheworld #birds
I thought to have a go at fooling the Merlin Bird ID app with my "impression" of an Eurasian Collared Dove down at the allotment this late afternoon 😁 Did I manage to? Weird #iOS bug: This (and only this) app has this drop shadow behind its description. No amount of tweaking seems to remove it 🤷

Edit: More precisely, all app icon text has a drop shadow, but only #MerlinBirdID is misaligned.

Heckenbraunellen!
1) heute Morgen durch das offene Badezimmerfenster gehört und von #MerlinBirdId erkennen lassen.
2) beim Abwaschen durch das Fenster in der Einfahrt rumhopsen sehen.

Spent some time this cold grey morning outside for the Great Backyard Bird Count. I saw only the usual flocks of house sparrows and starlings that live near the parking lot garden.
According to Merlin’s listening feature, I heard the neighbor blue jay (yep) and a cardinal (also a neighbor) and a house finch. Never seen a house finch!
