MarenceSpent some time this cold grey morning outside for the Great Backyard Bird Count. I saw only the usual flocks of house sparrows and starlings that live near the parking lot garden.
According to Merlin’s listening feature, I heard the neighbor blue jay (yep) and a cardinal (also a neighbor) and a house finch. Never seen a house finch!

Die Weidenmeise ist eine der wenigen Meisenarten, die ihre Bruthöhle selber baut. Hierfür braucht sie morsche Baumstämme und Äste, in die sie die kleinen Höhlen hacken kann. Am häufigsten findet man die Weidenmeise in feuchten, unterholzreichen Mischwäldern mit Weiden, Erlen und Birken, in höheren Lagen, aber auch in Nadelwäldern. Die auch Mönchsmeise genannte Meise ernährt sich vor allem von Insekten, deren Larven, Spinnen und anderen wirbellosen Tieren sowie Sämereien.

IFR (she/her)My mum told me about an app that listens out for #birds and then identifies them from their #birdsong. I knew there were a lot of birds here, but during a ten minute period at the weekend it identified all of these!
It then plays back whatever you want it to, so you can learn to identify the birds by ear.
