Merlin could disappear in worst-case scenario, with British isles facing ecological ‘point of no return’

The merlin, Britain’s smallest bird of prey, is one of more than 200 species that will become extinct in the UK if action is not taken to curb emissions and unsustainable land use, a study has claimed.

According to the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), there is a 20-year window in which decisions on climate and land use will determine the fate of dozens of Britain’s native species.

¿Sabían que el nombre del mago Merlín se cambió hace casi 900 años solo para evitar que sonara como una "mala palabra" en francés?

El personaje original se llamaba Myrddin, un nombre de las leyendas de Gales. Cuando el escritor Geoffrey de Monmouth decidió escribir su historia en el año 1136, tuvo que adaptar el nombre al latín. Si lo hubiera traducido de forma directa, el nombre resultante habría sido Merdinus.

El problema fue que en esa época, en el francés que hablaba la nobleza, esa palabra sonaba idéntica a merde, que significa... "excremento"...

Para que nadie se burlara de un sabio consejero asociándolo con algo sucio, el autor decidió cambiar la letra "d" por la "l". Así nació el nombre Merlín, transformando una posible burla en el nombre del mago más famoso de la historia.
