Zorgvlied memorial park, Amsterdam, where “worries flee”. The auditorium was built in 1931, in the style of the “Amsterdamse School”, by architect K.J. Mijnarends. The hall carries the Amstelveen coat of arms (four white X’s on a red background), as the site was purchased in 1870 by Amstelveen in an attempt to halt the expansion of Amsterdam.

As Memorial Park leaders embark on a project to honor its World War I roots, an explosive discovery was made this week. Part of an artillery shell was found in a wooded area, according to HPD, which deployed its bomb squad and detonated the device.

World War I-era artillery shell detonated by bomb squad after being found at Houston’s Memorial Park

The explosive discovery was made during site preparations for Memorial Groves, a $42 million revitalization project that will pay homage to the park’s origins as Camp Logan. The site served as a U.S. Army training facility between 1917-19, when more than 70,000 soldiers trained there.
