America’s Cup Preliminaries: Luna Rossa triumphs in Cagliari, defeating the New Zealand team. Now plans are being made for Naples 2027.
In the Gulf of Angels, the festival is entirely Italian. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli closed out the preliminary regattas of the 38th America’s Cup by defeating the defending Team New Zealand in the final, sending a clear signal ahead of the Naples 2027 challenge. The crew “senior,” led by Peter Burling and Ruggero Tita, won the decisive match race in Cagliari, favored also by the penalty imposed on the New Zealanders for an early start. The Italians managed the race with authority on the AC40s, despite a small mistake in the fourth part of the course that created some suspense.
For Luna Rossa, this is a victory that is particularly significant symbolically: beating the defending champions in front of the home crowd strengthens the Italian team’s ambitions on the long road to the America’s Cup, which will be held in Naples in 2027. However, there is also regret for Luna Rossa’s Youth and Women team, which was the absolute protagonist of the first days of the regattas. The crew with Marco Gradoni and Margherita Porro at the helm closed the first eight trials just one point behind Team New Zealand Senior, remaining fully in contention for the final match race.
The AC40s used in the preliminary regattas represent only a part of the work that will lead to the AC75 boats, which will be the protagonists of the America’s Cup. Because they will be new.
At the team’s base on Ichnusa dock in Cagliari, work on the new AC75 has already begun. Under a large white tent, the boat with which Luna Rossa will attempt to win the oldest trophy in the sport for the first time is taking shape. In the coming months, tests will continue on wings and sails, while the crew turnover will also continue, including the possibility of seeing Margherita Porro at the helm again.
The victory in Cagliari comes at a crucial time for the Italian organization of the America’s Cup. Work on the new base in the Bagnoli area should begin in September, while the team’s transfer to Naples is expected in the first months of next year. The city of the Gulf – with a long tradition in maritime sports – awaits their arrival with impatience. To Corriere della Sera, Max Sirena, the team director, says: “If we want fans to talk about us, alongside Sinner and Antonelli, we must force ourselves to win. New Zealand remains the team to beat: we have worked a lot to close the gap; from now on, we have no excuses.” Of course, ambition exists: “I want to win the America’s Cup with Luna Rossa for Italy and for Patrizio Bertelli.” Sirena, who has already won with Oracle and New Zealand, has no doubts. “But I want to win with Luna Rossa.”

Meloni, Brussels, and the circuit breaker of flexibility
The attempt to obtain a loosening of fiscal regulations in the name of the energy crisis has clashed with the prudence of the European Commission. The key issue is eminently political: what margin of economic and energy autonomy remains for European governments in a prolonged shock phase? The paradox of the premier is that with the Trump factor diminished, the relationship with Brussels has become a strategic necessity.
